Nintendo’s habit of dropping big news out of nowhere seems to be as strong as ever. Following yesterday’s announcement of “Switch successor” news coming within this fiscal year, the company released a trailer this morning for a new retro-focused title coming soon to Switch.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition brings the spirit of competition to a collection of classics from the NES era, including The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Metroid, and more. Inspired by Nintendo’s in-person championship events held in 1990, 2015 and 2017, this new Switch game “challenges players to battle through bite-sized bits of classic blockbusters,” as they take on over 150 unique speedrunnning challenges.

How fast can you defeat Octoroks in The Legend of Zelda? How fast can you collect a Mushroom in Super Mario Bros.? Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition gives you the chance to find out. Players will unlock new challenges and other in-game rewards through the single-player Speedrun Mode, and compete against up to eight friends locally in Party Mode. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can also take their scores online in the World Championships Mode.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition will feature challenges taken from 13 different NES titles:

  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • Balloon Fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Excitebike
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Metroid
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is set to release on July 18th, 2024. You can pre-order the digital edition (priced at $29.99 USD) from Nintendo’s online store here and from select retailers.
