Nintendo Was Once Developing A Horror Game Starring Tingle

If you’re a fan of The Legend of Zelda series, then you should know all about Tingle, the thirty five-year-old man who is obsessed with forest fairies. Tingle has become somewhat of a staple in the Zelda franchise, so much so, that Nintendo actually decided to feature him in his very own game: Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland. The game’s developer Vanpool partnered with Nintendo on a few Tingle spin-off titles before moving on to different projects, but you’d be surprised to learn that the developer actually intended to take the quirky Zelda character into some off-the-wall directions.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, producer Kensuke Tanabe revealed that, after the release of Ripened Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love, Nintendo actually teamed up with Vanpool to work on a horror game starring none other than Tingle himself. He recollects the idea:
“Looking back eight years ago, we were developing a horror game with Vanpool that starred Tingle as the main character, but that project was cancelled due to a variety of reasons.”
While the game never made it past development, Nintendo and Vanpool did continue to work together over the next few years, culminating in 2012’s Dillon’s Rolling Western, the first in a series of cult 3DS titles. Hopefully one day we’ll get to see what the team had in mind for this ill-fated Tingle horror game.
