Update: Nintendo Responds to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity eShop Exploit, Those Affected Will Not Receive DLC for Free
Posted on June 09 2021 by Rod Lloyd
Update: Nintendo has emailed the following statement to eShop customers who used last month’s eShop exploit to download the pre-purchase bonus from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity’s Expansion Pass for free:
On Friday May 28th 2021, the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass was made available for purchase on Nintendo eShop. Buying the Expansion Pass entitles users to a special Purchase Bonus of equippable items that can be used in-game immediately.
Unfortunately, an error on Nintendo eShop led to the Purchase Bonus being briefly made available to all users. Furthermore, downloading the Purchase Bonus without buying the Expansion Pass gave the impression that the Expansion Pass was then purchased, when this is not the case. As you are one of the users affected, we’d like to apologise for this error.
Currently, users who downloaded the Purchase Bonus without buying the Expansion Pass are able to equip the related items in-game. However, once Expansion Pass Wave 1 – Pulse of the Ancients becomes available, these items will no longer be usable unless the Expansion Pass is purchased. This will not affect your save file or ability to play the game.
Users affected by this issue are currently unable to purchase the Expansion Pass via Nintendo eShop. This will be resolved once Expansion Pass Wave 1 – Pulse of the Ancients is released, at which point the purchase button will be accessible again.
Once again, we apologise for this error and any inconvenience caused.
Once Wave 1 of Age of Calamity‘s DLC is released later this month, users who took advantage of the eShop exploit to download the pre-purchase bonus will no longer have access to the bonus in-game items, unless of course they purchase the Expansion Pass. These users will be able to purchase the Expansion Pass as normal once Wave 1 is released.
The Expansion Pass for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity costs $19.99 USD. Wave 1 of the DLC will release in June, and Wave 2 will release in November.
Original: The first taste of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity‘s Expansion Pass, a pre-purchase bonus that adds Ancient Armor and an Ancient Sword to Link’s arsenal, was released today. While most can only receive this bonus with the purchase of the entire DLC package, some fans in the UK and Europe woke up this morning to an unexpected surprise.
Reports began surfacing Friday morning claiming that a faulty Nintendo eShop listing allowed some users to download Age of Calamity‘s pre-purchase bonus for free, which in turn gave those users credit for purchasing the entire Expansion Pass. The exploit was reportedly possible for users in the UK, EU, and Australia, as well as users in other regions who changed their location to one of the three mentioned.
A few hours after its discovery, the exploit seems to have been corrected. As of the time of writing, the pre-purchase bonus is reportedly listed as “not available for purchase” for users in the affected regions.
Zelda Dungeon has reached out to Nintendo for comment.
With the remaining “waves” of Age of Calamity DLC yet to be released, users who capitalized on this exploit can only download the pre-purchase bonus at this time. It is unclear if, once Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have fully responded to the situation, the bonus and the remainder of the Expansion Pass will still be available to users who downloaded the content for free. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
You can purchase the Expansion Pass for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity right now for $19.99 USD. “Wave 1” of the DLC will release in June, and “Wave 2” will release in November.
