Nintendo has announced its purchasing of Dynamo Pictures, a Tokyo-based animation studio. Under Nintendo’s ownership, it will be renamed as Nintendo Pictures and will focus on developing visual content for Nintendo’s various intellectual properties.

This represents a wholesale acquisition of the company, as the official documentation states that:

“Nintendo has decided to acquire 100% of the outstanding shares (excluding treasury shares) of Dynamo Pictures and make it a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen the planning and production structure of visual content in the Nintendo group. The Acquisition is expected to close on October 3, 2022…[and] will have only a minor effect on Nintendo’s results for this fiscal year.”

Dynamo Pictures were behind a collection of short films developed for the Pikmin franchise. As stated above, this purchase is not intended to have much impact on Nintendo’s fiscal performance this year. It also has no effect on the upcoming Mario movie produced by Illumination.

While it is definitely outside the norm for Nintendo to acquire companies in this way, a dedicated animation studio has been anticipated for quite a while. It is a sensible move for Nintendo to have an in-house development team for this type of content, as they are likely looking to expand their position in the entertainment industry. Perhaps we’ll finally get that long-desired Zelda TV series or an entire Nintendo streaming platform.

You can find all of the acquisition info in the official documentation here.
