Monday Comic Corner – Recorder
Posted on January 21 2013 by ralphpotato
For this week’s Comic Corner we have a rather old comic from the Brawl in the Family series. In fact, this happens to be the very first Brawl in the Family that features Link!
It should be obvious from the title, “Recorder” that this comic was inspired by the original The Legend of Zelda, but unless you’ve been reading Brawl in the Family for a long time, you may not know what comes in the later panels.
All we know is the recorder in The Legend of Zelda summons a transporting tornado. Do you think you can guess what happens to Link? Or if you’ve read this comic before, can you remember?

Bill Watterson, the author of Calvin and Hobbes, once remarked that sometimes in a comic words can save bad artwork, and good artwork can save bad wording (or lack thereof). In this case, the latter is definitely true, and the last panel I find absolutely hilarious. I think Link’s eyes and mouth really convey the hysterical fit Link found himself in.
As I touched on in my first Monday Comic Corner, I think comics more than anything allow the community to explore ideas and poke fun at some of the miscellaneous things we take for granted in the franchise, or video games in general. I mean, it doesn’t really make much sense at all to have a tornado, which is summoned by a recorder, transport a living being around the land. I never second guessed this idea before, though, and I don’t think many of you have either.
There isn’t much more to say about this comic, and there were no notes by the author, but if you’re interested you can browse some of the other Brawl in the Family comics staring with this one here.
What other game mechanics do we take for granted in the Zelda series, or other video games even? Tell us in the comments!
