Majora’s Mask 3D or new Nintendo 3DS Zelda Title?

The topic is simple, which one would you rather see released first? Just a few days ago Eiji Aonuma put out a swapnote release, hinting at a new Legend of Zelda. If you missed his previous post, he had this to say.

“Hello, this is Aonuma, Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda producer. Did you enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D? Thanks to everyone, the Legend of Zelda series had a very happy 25th anniversary. I hope you’re looking forward to new Legend of Zelda games.”

Since Aonuma mentioned Ocarina of Time 3D, this should give us a few clues as to what new Legend of Zelda games are going to be released first. First and foremost, I think this almost guarantees that a Nintendo 3DS Zelda title will be released before a Nintendo Wii U title. If it was the other way around, I’d think Aonuma would have mentioned Skyward Sword instead of Ocarina of Time 3D in the Swapnote. So what will release first, Majora’s Mask 3D or a new Nintendo 3DS Zelda title?

Let me first take you back to November of 2011. Skyward Sword was still a few weeks away and Eiji Aonuma was doing his media rounds to promote the game. During this time he was constantly asked about the idea of Majora’s Mask being remade for the 3DS, stemming from the Operation Moonfall movement. Aonuma had previously stated that if there was fan interest and demand, they would certainly consider it. However, in November he had this to say about the prospects of a remake.

“I hear about it often, and is a topic I’ve discussed many times with Mr. Miyamoto. However, we just released the Ocarina Of Time to the market, and now I believe we want the next The Legend of Zelda for Nintendo 3DS to be an original title, I believe that this is the way forward in the near future.”

So how do we reconcile the Swapnote and this quote from November? Well, I think the November quote clearly says that a new 3DS Zelda title will be out first. However, I think the mention to Ocarina of Time 3D could mean that a new 3DS title uses the same game engine as Ocarina of Time 3D. Thus if fans liked Ocarina of Time 3D, they’ll enjoy the next new Nintendo 3DS title. This would make sense to me, since if they were releasing another handheld game like say… Spirit Tracks, I don’t think they’d make the reference to Ocarina of Time 3D.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Majora’s Mask 3D isn’t being made simultaneously. It was the company Grezzo that worked on Ocarina of Time 3D, so they could very well be working on Majora’s Mask 3D at the moment, while Nintendo is handling the new 3DS title. It really is up in the air and perhaps we could be completely off on our speculation. Heck a few weeks back we heard that bogus speculation about dual Legend of Zelda titles being made for the 3DS. Anything is really possible at this point.
