Since the release of Super Mario Maker, fans have remained excited for the prospect of a Zelda Maker releasing some time in the future. Nintendo has not acted on this possibility, but luckily others have accepted this challenge in their place. Legend Maker is an indie project currently in development by Dream Mix, aiming to fulfill the ambitious goal of creating massive action-adventure worlds in the same vein as our favorite Zelda games. After several months of development, Dream Mix has started a Kickstarter campaign for Legend Maker, setting a $40,000 USD goal in order to turn this dream project into a reality.

Legend Maker began development last year as Zelda Maker, showing a lot of early promise based on concept videos by Dream Mix. However, due to obvious copyright concerns surrounding the concept, the folks at Dream Mix re-branded the project as Legend Maker, a title with its own completely unique art style and assets. Since this re-branding, Legend Maker is looking quite polished, demonstrating its promise of dungeon, overworld, and even quest creation.

Earlier today, Dream Mix officially launched its Legend Maker Kickstarter, setting a base goal of $40,000 USD to raise the resources necessary to bring the project into fruition. Dream Mix describes the project in this way:

“Legend Maker is a game where you create, share, and play action adventure game worlds. The size and scale of these worlds can be absolutely massive (approximately 1000 times larger than the size of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past), or you can make a single dungeon and call it quits. The size of each world is up to you.”

Unlike some Kickstarter projects that offer only a concept and a promise, Legend Maker has released an alpha demo along with the Kickstarter to give backers an idea of how the final game will work. This demo only provides the basic tools for dungeon creation, but the final game aims to have area creation for dungeons, overworlds, houses, and caves, as well as NPC, boss, and quest creation if certain stretch goals are met. The Kickstarter page even provides some songs from the game’s soundtrack, which are sounding great.

The campaign’s base goal is set at $40,000 USD, which will cover the initial release of Legend Maker on PC. Other stretch goals include a $45,000 USD goal for Mac and Linux support, an $80,000 USD goal for extended support for in-game cutscenes, a $100,000 USD goal for a full campaign included in the game, and a $150,000 USD goal for free periodic game updates.

Pledge rewards include digital / physical copies of the game and soundtrack, T-shirts, posters, a place in the game’s credits, and several others.
