Iwata Asks: Skyward Sword: Boomerang, Items, Upgrades, Much More
Posted on October 17 2011 by Mases Hagopian
The latest issue of Iwata Asks is now available, but unfortunately it is only in Japanese. The topic of discussion is none other than the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and there are tons of goodies. We are still waiting to get a full translation but we’ve picked apart some of the big ideas that were mentioned. Make the jump to check it out.
NOTE: This contains spoilers and is also a rough translation. We are still awaiting official word and a full breakdown. Stay tuned as we’ll be updating this post shortly.
UPDATE: An English Version is now available and we have made a NEW POST highlighting some of the points of discussion. This is only part 1 of 5, so stay tuned for the next installments of Iwata Asks.
- This is Fujibayashi’s first console Zelda, and he felt a lot of pressure. He wanted to make it a familiar Zelda feel.
- SS might have the same character/enemy designer as WW, but I think I’m misreading that part.
- Before Wii Sports Resort was released, Aonuma didn’t want to use WM+. The button controls were already pretty much complete when someone (I forgot who… this was said in the very first SS Iwata Asks from E3 2010) upended the teatable, so to say
- The sword beam was Miyamoto’s idea.
- The title is also a reference to a protector, or protected people of the sky (“ward”)
- Tanaka (UI person) tried twisting the wrist to select items at first, but that didn’t give enough of a radius.
- The development of the Beetle started out as a boomerang, then became a “rocket punch” to make more use of the WM+, and finally the Beetle.
- This presented a very difficult job for the field designers to make sure you can’t reach or see things that you’re not supposed to.
- The Gust Jar (either at some point in development or in the final game – didn’t catch which) could/can both blow and suck, and adjust power by adjusting the nosle width.
- “Ishida worries that some consumers may be put off by motion controls of Skyward Sword. This comes with the ‘challenge’ of learning a new control scheme that gamers aren’t used to.” (GoNintendo)
