How Zelda is the “Zelda” Level in Super Mario 3D Land?

Audrey Drake over at IGN recently posted about her hands on experience with the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary tribute level in the upcoming Super Mario 3D Land. We first heard about this level during the round table discussion at the last E3. As much as I love Zelda I also love Mario, so this “Zelda” themed level had my curiosity piqued. Here’s what Audrey had to say about it:

My most recent demo was of a level created in celebration of The Legend of Zelda’s 25th Anniversary. As a huge Zelda fan, I’ve been dying for my chance to jump through this particular stage since I saw it teased at an E3 roundtable. But compared to the rest of the game, I have to say the Zelda tribute level was rather disappointing.

Audrey explained the level as simply a Mario level where the camera situated the level in a top-down fashion similar to the original Legend of Zelda. She also mentioned the rug was Zelda themed, but the villains in the room were typical Mario villains. There is still hope for this tribute level though through a room she couldn’t enter:

But that room… that room that I couldn’t access because I needed to enter the level with fire power to light four torches has me quite curious. I don’t know what’s on the other side of that door, but all of my hopes for this Zelda level lie beyond its threshold.

I’m a bit disappointed at this news because I was looking forward to this Zelda themed level. Maybe we’ll find out what’s in that room before the game releases, but my guess is that will remain a secret.
