GenGAME – Theory about the Demon King
Posted on July 09 2013 by ralphpotato
With what we know from Skyward Sword, Hyrule Historia, and many other past Zelda games, Alex Plant at our sister site, GenGAME, has some ideas about what A Link Between Worlds will bring to the table. Before you proceed, there are many spoilers across the series, and most importantly Skyward Sword. The theories specifically are associated with this concept of the Demon King and how A Link Between Worlds might address that. Hit the jump to read more!
First, here’s the original article on GenGAME explaining Alex’s theory.
Basically, knowing the chronology of the Zelda games and what’s been said about the Demon King leads Alex to believe that, like Link, some of the main evil characters are all tied together in this concept of the Demon King. Demise is the forerunner to Ganondorf, who transforms into Ganon, and appears as Ganon again in A Link to the Past and the original Legend of Zelda.
An important distinction that’s made, however, is that Ganon is “a demonic beast, bereft of intelligence” since the resurrection in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons wasn’t quite complete. Within this Demon King lineage, it does seem like Ganondorf, from Ocarina of Time possess the most intelligence and cunning, more so than Demise, even. Here’s a quote from the GenGAME article:
However, it is clear that that this resurrection has not been totally successful. Ganon is “a demonic beast, bereft of intelligence,” whereas Demise seemed to possess some measure of intelligence, if an intelligence marked by greed and hatred. This calls to mind Demise’s own partially-resurrected form: the Imprisoned, which was also a “demonic beast, bereft of intelligence.” Its only drive was to escape its prison and torment the world.
Something that I find interesting that Alex doesn’t mention in his theory is that the A Link to the Past Ganon was able to obtain the entire Triforce, something that Ganondorf could not do in Ocarina of Time. After entering the Temple of Time and attempting to seize the Triforce, Ganondorf, and unbalanced individual, found himself with only the Triforce of Power, and the other two pieces went to Link and Zelda.
Somehow, the Ganon who is “a demonic beast, bereft of intelligence” was able to obtain the full Triforce and introduce the terrible Dark World. Alex does say that Ganon’s resurrection is something that Nintendo’s tried to blur the details, over, so perhaps there’s more to this than we know.
We’ll have to see what A Link Between Worlds tells us, with Nintendo more than ever concerned about the story and chronology of the games.
Alex does talk about more connections in the game, such as the appearance of the Triforce across the games, and how they’re displayed to the player. I strongly suggest you check out the original article on GenGAME.
