GameOver Jesse: Play As Female Link in Zelda Wi U?
Posted on November 22 2015 by Jon Lett
About a week ago, GameOver Jesse on YouTube took a look at recent happenings in Zelda, and examined what the possibilities might be for having a female lead character in the upcoming Zelda Wii U. With the new Linkle DLC for Hyrule Warriors, and possible evidence of female roles in developer quotes, there is certainly a lot to speculate on. With the help of RmfhGaming, Jesse discusses a lot of what he thinks Zelda Wii U will do to “change the conventions of Zelda”, as we have been told it will.

One of the stand-out parts of this discussion was how Aonuma said that he did not want people to be so focused on how Link looks. This is interesting, as people really have been very vocal about their wish for character customization in adventure games. Having a female, or at least a mildly customizable protagonist, would be all well and good, but is that what really matters to us? When you think back to your favorite Zelda game, do you think of how cool Link is, or how great aspects of the adventure are? The fact that Aonuma wants to focus less on the protagonist could either mean that he just allows customization for the sake of giving players the option, or that he makes sure to create Link as he normally is and then move on to more important aspects of the final game. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Also, looking at Linkle, one must remember that Nintendo originally rejected the idea of Linkle in the game. Yes, the fact that she is there now may mean that they are widening their horizons a bit, but it also may just mean that they are giving Koei Techmo more leway, and therefor letting them make her a fighter. It could very well be a decision that has nothing to do with their plans for characters in Zelda Wii U, which would be a shame, as I had lots of fun playing as Zelda and the other women in Hyrule Warriors, and I am sure doing so in Zelda Wi U would prove equally awesome.
What do you guys think? Will Zelda Wii U have female options for a lead role? Does Linkle as a character indicate Nintendo’s views of the Zelda series and it’s characters? Drop a comment!
