Breath of the Wild ZeldaU: return of golden wolf of TP

Joined
May 5, 2015
Hi all,

Been lurking for several months waiting for someone to mention/discuss this but seems like no one has noticed it (or cares) but in the video that was released at the end of last year, it appears that the golden wolf will be in ZeldaU. If you missed it, then look at the video when link is riding epona to what seems to be the great bridge of hylia. On the right at the top of a rock is a golden wolf.

What do people think of this? might this allude to the new game being in the same timeline as TP, and also does this suggest the creators are wanting to put more consideration into having a more interactive, thoughtful combat with enemies where you'll have to use the right techniques against certain enemies?

Could you maybe provide the video? Give us a timestamp of were in it?

Not the greatest picture and you only see it for a few seconds in the video so it's easy to miss. The best video to see it in is probably this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MGlHnwVDmc (it is visible between 17:57-17:59)

I hate to say this, but, that looks more to be just a random goat, not a wolf! Sorry.
A goat that has conveniently positioned himself on a big rock just like how the golden wolf did in TP? (if I recall correctly, been a while since I've played it)

Suffice to say, I'm not convinced by your argument.

*Okay, this last one might have some truth to it as goats are pretty amazing tbf

Um:

1) You have heard of mountain goats and goats that happen to live in wilderness have you? I mean seriously, where do you think farmers and ranchers get their goats from? Surely, they don't just pop up from thin air. They had to come from somewhere. Also, it is known that some species of goats do like to stand on rocks, especially, oh gee, I don't know, mountain goats!

2) You recalled one thing from TP kinda correctly but not the fact that there were goats in TP as well. Do you not remember the ordon goats? You kinda remember the way the golden wolf positions himself but not the ordon goats?

3) The golden wolf was positioned in secret, rare focused on hiding spots, so you got that right. However, he never waited for Link standing up, he was found sitting as he waited for Link. Like this:

latest

4) After increase the definition on a screen capture image I took, I can clearly tell that the animal that you think is the golden wolf is definitely not a wolf. Look at this:

y3x5xIF.jpg

See? You can clearly see that the animal has horns or antlers. And we all know that wolves do not have horns or antlers.

Fair enough, point taken. I must have tried to remove the incredibly slow start of TP out of my mind! There's still some things I wonder though:

Okay yes, there are Ordon goats but that wouldn't explain what it is doing out in the middle of Hyrule Field by itself. The ordon goats were dark in colour, whilst this animal is more blonde/golden. Of course, I know you aren't suggesting that these goats must be the same type as the ones in TP. Second, it does seem to oddly placed, we didn't see a sign of any other animal (horses aside) in the video so it seems a little strange to me just to see one perched up on a big rock. So it stills leaves the question as to what this may mean for the overworld and/or gameplay of ZeldaU:

1. If it is just random (leaving aside the speculation of a goat/wolf/stag or whatever it might be) does this suggest that perhaps the overworld will be packed with various creatures that are not enemies but just there to merely add depth to the world? They are unlikely to have just stuck one random animal in the game so it might be a suggestion to their efforts of making an overworld full of living creatures. I think that would be quite cool as I think that Zelda could do with a world packed with more life to give it a little bit more realism. If they have chosen to do that, I also hope they choose to increase the number of Gorons/Zoras/Hylians too.

2. If it isn't random (again leaving aside the animal species speculation), then what might this suggest for a gameplay mechanic in ZeldaU. The only comparison I could think of is the TP one, and if we were going to make comparisons to that, the animal does appear to be somewhat golden which is what originally had me think that it might be a wolf and a sign of them reintroducing that idea back (or a similar one to that effect).

Anyway, considering there's not really much to discuss at the moment in terms of Zelda U, I thought it might be worthwhile exploring what this may mean either in terms of features of the overworld or gameplay mechanics :)

Honestly, when I saw it I thought it was a stag, but that's a cool thing to notice, I didn't make that connection. Also, let's be honest,
You can't see anything clearly on that, it could be a wolf with a cloud behind its head. Gold isn't a normal colour for a goat or a stag either, so perhaps if it is one of those rather than a wolf it is part of a hunting quest or something? Maybe golden animals drop rupees when you shoot them?
I would like to believe it's the Gold Wolf, and even though I'm not 100% convinced, it's a very cool possibility.

It doesn't look like a cloud. It's shaped to horns/antlers like to be a cloud. I can clearly enough tell that it's a part of the animal and not a cloud. Wolves don't have horns or antlers. The animal is clearly stag or a goat, not a wolf.

It isn't a clear picture though, that's like giving me a blurry picture of a forest and being like 'well hey, you can clearly see this blurry lump in the background is Bigfoot and not a rock, because rocks aren't that shape.' I'm not saying you're wrong, or even that I disagree with you that it's got antlers, it does look like that. What I'm saying is that the picture is definitely of a bad enough quality that we could both be wrong and that could be a cloud or something behind it in the sky.

I think you misunderstood me. I know what you said. I was saying it's clear enough to me that those are horn are antlers and not a cloud.

Goats appeared in Twilight Princess and were rather prominent considering that Ordona reassembled a goat (which maybe points at goats being somewhat of a sacred creature of sorts). Also goats were also clearly shown in the first screenshot/trailer of Zelda U, so we do actually have confirmation that they appear in the game. I also agree with @VitaTempusN92 that the screenshot seems to show some sort of horns/antlers, which resemble the ones seen in the oirginal trailer.

Good spot though, I just think it's a long shot.

The blurry image, it's like trying to spot Bigfoot in the background.

At this point it is hard to make a call considering we know nothing of the story or what will be in it. However I might also agree that it is a random animal. Especially since in the video we see Link roaming past other animals on the side of the road that move out of Epona's way.

If anyone remembers the whole "Skull Kid found" in the SS threads a few years ago. Turns out if was a random bug enemy all along and just had a somewhat similar silhouette. Nintendo actually does not like to reuse that many characters and concepts from past games in the Zeda series so I would highly doubt a return of something from a previous game outside of maybe an image on a wall or some form of easter egg.
