Ah, I was beginning to miss Baas's comedic gold.

"WHY, JAMES WHHHHYYYYY!!!"

I lol'd very hard when I read that.

Anyways, great chapter. It's cool to know a little more about Vaati. Although, I wonder what it is that the Discretes were looking for with Baas and Vaati... and what is their goal? Cliffhanger time. :D

What is the mysterious intentions of the Discretes? What exactly do they hope to find in Baas and Vaati? Does this have anything to do with Diablo and the mysterious woman who seems to be his master? And most importantly, why did James have to die so young? Find out next time on Wig. Or. LOG!!

Chapter 30 : A Gift

Jaloer put his hands on the back of his head and smiled widely as he walked along the mountain trail. He loved days like this. The sun was high in the sky. Not only that but there were clouds there too. The cumulus kind. It was a type of sky that was picturesque. Too him, it was a perfect sky.

Jaloer had always been this way. To him, the most valuable thing about something, was how it looked. The more symmetrical and natural things looked, the more they attracted him. It was why he wore a simple orange shirt, blues jeans, socks and sneakers. It was why he used twin swords. They looked natural to him.

He stopped walking, closed his eyes, and took a huge whiff of the air. There was really no reason to do this, he just did it because he knew people typically inhaled deep breaths when they felt at peace. It was times like these that really made him feel relaxed. He wasn’t sure if anything could make this day better than it already was.

"Excuse me." Came a voice. "Could you please tell me where the weapons are manufactured?"

Jaloer looked down from his sky gazing. In front of him was a girl. She looked about the same age as him but he had never seen her before. Perhaps she was new from the Center and just looked older. Whatever her age was, Jaloer thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Her height, her straight hair, her body, even her smile. They were all perfect. Everything about her was perfect. She wasn’t too strong, nor too skinny. She wasn’t too tall, nor too short. She was exactly what Jaloer thought a female of his age group should look like.

Jaloer did not typically find himself truly attracted to many females. Sure he had found some pretty and had had his share of flirting, but this was the first time his heart pounded from the mere sight of a person. He had to find out more about her.

"Well, I could tell you." He said fixing his posture. "But I think it would be more polite to show you so you don’t get lost."

The girl let out a giggle.
"Well thank you. With what I’ve been through in the last week, it’s nice to see some people with manners for a change."

Jaloer stretched out his left hand behind him as though to let the girl go first.
"The pleasure is mine. By the way, they say my name Jaloer."

The girl face palmed herself playfully.
"My apologies. Had I known I would be talking to you for more than a second, I would have properly introduced myself. They say my name is Sheina."

The two began walking down the side of the mountain in the heat of the day.

"Thanks for showing me around." Sheina said, keeping the conversation going "I know you probably have better things to be doing."

"Not at all. I still have to wait at least 5 more years before I get to see any action. And I actually work where we’re going so it’s not a big change for me."

"Wow you make weapons?"

Jaloer let out a boastful grin.
"Yes indeed I do. I specifically asked for that job because I can‘t stand to find a flaw in weapons. It‘s taken me up until now to get the hang of doing it by myself. But that‘s just me. Have you gotten a job yet?"

Sheina let out a shy look.
"All I do for Orange is cook."

"Don‘t say it like that. When you say anything like that you make it sound bad. Technically, all I do for Orange is make weapons. There are tons of people who can do that. But I’m special. I have a knack for noticing the imperfections of a weapon. It’s a gift of mine. Just find what you‘re good at. Find your gift."

Sheina thought about that for a little bit.
"You know, you’re right. I used to be proud of my cooking. Proud that I serve the best food anyone could find. I guess it’s just what I’ve been through; I was beginning to feel useless. My team is filled with such talented people..."

"Whoa. Hold on. You’re on a team?"

"Yes."

Jaloer was silent for a second. He was pondering whether or not to ask the question in his mind.

"If you don’t mind me asking… how old are you?"

Sheina giggled. She understood his curiosity.
"I’m 18 years old."

Jaloer was shocked.
"And you’re already on a team?"

Sheina was beginning to feel special.
"Yes, I’m on Atsuma’s team in the first base."

All of these facts completely through Jaloer. This girl was his age, yet she was from the first base and she was already on a team AND that team was Atsuma’s team. But… none of that exempted the fact that she was still his dream girl. He simply continued to talk pleasurably in order to not ruin the atmosphere.

"You must be skilled indeed then. I see you’re a leader. Do you prefer Far or Near techniques?"

"I use twin swords."

"Really?" Jaloer was even more intrigued. "A twin sword user on first base’s best team. That’s a great thought. And you’re a cook too. The guys must be all over you in back home."

Sheina giggled. This guy was just being funny but he had no idea how close to the truth that was.
"I don’t see how twin swords would make me more attractive."

"Well, maybe not to everyone. But I keep in my mind certain things that should be. I believe having twin swords is the most natural look for a fighter as they incorporate symmetry."
Jaloer then looked at Sheina and spoke a little more softly. "A fighter with twin swords is the most beautiful fighter to me."

Sheina looked back. That was a kind thing to say. Normally she was used to kind words, but she had been with Baas and his jokes for so long that they felt like a breath of fresh air.
She wasn’t sure, but she may have blushed.

"Wow, forgive me for feeling flustered, but it’s hard to believe I’m hearing words like these. My team is always joking around and this is a nice refresher."

"I would think someone on Atsuma’s team would have tales of great friendship and such."

"Yeah right. More like tales of great frustration. I often dreamt of the day I left the first base. Now I feel as though I was actually more comfortable in my eating place serving others my special food."

"I don’t think it’s too late to change your mind. I would love to try some of your cooking."

Jaloer’s smile remained on his face. Not only to keep up his politeness, but to also show how proud he was the way he had snuck in an invitation to the conversation.

Sheina was delighted at the flattery.
"Well, maybe you will."

Jaloer continued to smile. He had a shot.

The two came across a wooden structure along the trail. The building was about as big as the place where Sheina had seen Serho, and as deep. Though they had already been passing by several of these, Jaloer stopped at this one.

"Well, this is the place."

He stood waiting anxiously hoping she would say...

"Thank you. Since you work here and all, could you escort me inside?"

"Yes!" Jaloer thought in his head. He kept his cool though and just proceeded to walk in with the pretty girl at his side.

The inside of the structure felt much different than the outside. It was incredibly dark. The light from the burning furnace in the back left corner was the main light source. Around the building, hanging on the walls, were many sorts of weapons. Sheina had never seen so many non wooded weapons in one place. They overlapped each other nonstop. Some of them were even on the floor.

"I can’t believe we use so many weapons." She said in awe.

"What this?" Jaloer said as though it were nothing. "This is what happens when I get the day off. On a normal day, I can’t possibly find enough space for all the weapons."

"How long does it take to make a weapon?"

Jaloer thought to himself.
"Well, it depends on the person. Someone who is incredibly skilled can finish making a weapon in three days minimum. Atleast, that’s the record Altea has. She’s our best weapons maker."

"Really? I saw her working on some project earlier."

"Those horseshoes. Yeah. Unfortunately, even for her that’s proving to be too difficult. No one’s made one in a long time so the instructions on how to do so isn’t something anyone can remember."

"That must be frustrating for Eltin. His sister is the best weapons maker and he still can’t get his project working."

Jaloer began to realize the shift in topic.
"Well… when I said she was the best, I may not have been entirely sure. It’s actually debated on whether I’m better than her."

Sheina raised one eyebrow and put her hands on her hips. "Are you sure you’re not exaggerating? You were so confident in her skills and now you suddenly change your mind."

Jaloer was in trouble. He did not panic though. He knew how to fix this. He began to move toward the back right corner of the large room.

"Altea may be the fastest, but let me show you why I’m debated to be her rival."

In the corner, there was a door Sheina hadn’t noticed before. That was Jaloer destination. He was intending to go in there. Suddenly, before he could open it, the door burst open.

"Sis you’ve done it again!"

Out came Eltin, talking loud with a huge smile on his face. Atsuma followed with a simple smirk on his. Every time he took a step, a small cling noise could be heard. Then came Altea with her usual calm look.

Jaloer was startled. He had thought the place would be abandoned for the day. Still he was trying to do something and made his way past the four.

Sheina was curious as to what the fuss was about.

"Hey Atsuma." She said joyfully. "What’s going on?"
"Hey Squirt." Atsuma answered back. "We were just working on a little experiment."

Altea turned her head and looked at Atsuma with a raised eyebrow.

"I’m sorry," Atsuma corrected himself, "I mean, Altea was just working on a little project. Actually, she spent all night doing it."

Atsuma then looked down at his feet. Sheina followed his motions. On his feet, were white shoes. White shoes? That was unusual. Sheina knew that Atsuma liked to where dark colors.

"I know what you’re thinking.” Atsuma said still smirking, “but these aren’t for me. In fact they’re a little too small for me."

A loud noise of banging weapons soon came from the room the three had emerged from.
"Okay Sheina," Jaloer said emerging from the room with swords in his hands, "come with me." Jaloer headed quickly toward the exit.

"Be right back guys." Sheina said following Jaloer.

"There he goes again." Eltin said with a huge smile. "Always trying to prove that he’s the perfect human being."

"I think it’s more than that." Atsuma said watching the two leave. "I think Jaloer’s got a little thing for Sheina."

"Oh way to go Atsuma." Eltin joked "It wasn’t enough to have half your base going after that poor girl. You had to show her off to our boys too? Now they’ll all want to go to first base to be with her."

Atsuma shrugged. "Hey, when you got it, you got it. And apparently, Sheina’s got it."

"From what you’ve told me, I’m shocked she hasn’t chosen a boyfriend yet."

"Sheina’s not the type to just fall for the first guy to compliment her. She’s probably waiting to meet what she thinks is the right guy. What would make it hilarious is if it’s someone who has completely no interest in her."

"Now come on Atsuma, Orange is full of crazy people, but you’d have to be a complete moron to not see some value in that girl if you’re her age. Can you really think of someone that oblivious?"

Atsuma thought to himself for a second. Then he smirked. "Actually..."

Sheina and Jaloer hadn’t gone far. They just went to the side of the building where there was more room to work. Jaloer wanted to show Sheina something, but he would need space to do it.

In Jaloer’s hands were four swords. Sheina couldn’t make out what they were when they were bunched together like that, but she believed they were all twin swords.

"Here." Jaloer said. He took two of the twin swords from his hands and handed them to Sheina. "Try using these for a little bit."

Sheina wasn’t sure what Jaloer was doing, but there was no harm in a little practice. She took the swords from him and moved away. Jaloer stood back to watch the show.

Sheina took the swords in her hands and crossed them in front of her face. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her arms knew what to do. The rest of her body knew what to do. Everything was just waiting for Sheina’s signal. Then… she started. The swords in her hand became graceful and elegant tools. Sheina loved the feeling of fighting with twins. Twirling this way and that as though they were two separate weapons, and then bringing them together as though they were one. She then began to demonstrate quick slices. These really got her going. She got so into it, she let out a loud yell during each slice.

"Yah!"

"HA!"

Jaloer laughed at that. Sheina had almost forgotten he was watching her. She decided to do a little showing off. She increased the speed of her tricks. Getting faster and faster, yet still staying elegant. The attempt to impress Jaloer worked. Sheina was indeed very graceful. The perfect thought of what a person with twin swords should fight. She was not the best he’d ever seen, but with the grace, elegance, and beauty, she was definitely the best looking he’d ever seen.

Sheina, feeling satisfied, began to slow down. Time seemed to slow for Jaloer. Sheina herself seemed to be moving in slow motion. So when she turned to Jaloer and asked "How was that?" it had a major effect on him.

For a second, Jaloer was stuck in a gaze. The light was shining down on Sheina perfectly. She was, then, the most beautiful creature he had ever seen in his life. He had completely forgotten the whole point he had wanted to do.

Then, suddenly, he could hear a noise in the distance. The noise broke him from his gaze. It sounded like… laughter. Sheina heard it too. Only thing was, she recognized it. The two turned to see someone running toward them really fast along the mountain trail. Sheina could tell who the guy dress in all white was.

Baas continued to run at a top speed, laughing incredibly hard. He then recognized Sheina. He thought of a joke he could pull, but he had no time so he just continued to run.

"Hey Sheina..."

That was all Baas said before making a turn. He turned and ran behind the building where Sheina and Jaloer had emerged.

Sheina and Jaloer stared in confusion. They then turned toward each other. Then turned toward where Baas had come from. Soon, there was more noise. And running down the trail, were 6 guys, all of different ages yet still very young, who were all wet. Their faces were filled with anger. The angry mob no longer saw their prey, but they did see Jaloer. The one in front spoke before the group reached the two.

"Hey Jaloer! Did you see a kid run by?"

Jaloer raised an eyebrow. "Did he have on all white? A big smile on his face?"

The angry group had now reached the two.
"Yeah! The punk splashed water all over us."

Sheina put her hand on her face in embarrassment. There was no doubt in her mind who they were talking about.

Jaloer let out a smile "You guys let some kid dump a bucket of water on you?"

"Not like that exactly," the rest of the group began to participate, "The guy came in and was fighting in the training room."

"He was really good by the way..."

"Beat everyone one of us..."

"Shut up, that’s not important."

"So we fight the guy and we’re good sports but..."

"And he set this up before he even came in the training room..."

"We leave and trip over some rope which goes all over the exit.."

"And it causes water to just fall on all of us."

"Well" Jaloer thought out loud, "That’s very sophisticated."

"Yeah." The oldest of the group replied. "I think he had Altea help him out. So, where did he go? That was uncalled for and we need to teach him some respect."
The guy pounded his fist into his other hand.

Jaloer understood and was going to cooperate "Oh yeah we saw him he..."

"Ran that way." Sheina said pointing further down the trail.

"Thanks." The eldest said. "Let’s go guys."

"Can we walk a little?" The youngest of the group asked. "That guys fast. We can’t keep up with him anyways."

The group began to continue down the trail slowly.

"Quit being a baby." One of them said. "First he beats you, and then he embarrasses you, now you want him to out run you?"

"But he is fast. I’ve never seen anyone his age move that fast."

"Once we’re through with him, he won’t be able to move that fast either."

The sound of the group talking faded while they left Sheina and Jaloer’s sight.

"You know, it’s not okay to lie Sheina."

Sheina and Jaloer were startled to see Baas standing really closely behind them. He was shaking his head in disappointment.

Sheina’s expression grew upset. She put her hands on her hips and marched up to Baas.

"I wouldn’t have had to lie if you could just control yourself. Why can’t you just be civilized for one day Baas?"

"Because civilization is not my style. And even still, that doesn’t make it okay to lie."

"You’re impossible."

"No, I’m Baas."

"Oh, ha. I’m not Vatti. Your jokes don’t work on me."

"You dare underestimate the power of my comedy?"

"No, I dare underestimate the power of your brain."

Baas began to speak but stopped. He had a comeback, but he couldn’t say it. The joke Sheina had made was really funny to him and he began giggling uncontrollably.

Jaloer looked at the strange kid in front of him. All white? What kind of random person wears all white? That wasn't a natural look for a person. And his sense of humor was overloaded. Jaloer was not sure he would like this kid.

"I take it you know this kid, Sheina."

Sheina crossed her arms and put her nose to the air. "I wish I didn’t. He’s one of my teammates."

Once again, Jaloer was shocked by the news presented to him..
"There’s no way. He doesn’t look older than..."

"16?" Sheina finished. "That’s right. He’s straight out of the Center."

"Well that’s..."

"Hey." Baas said suddenly arising from his laughter. "Can I see those swords?"

Jaloer looked at his hands. His attention had been diverted so much that he had forgotten his purpose for coming out here with Sheina in the first place.

"Come on." Baas said, "You got to let me see those. I’ve never tried ones like those before."

"What are you talking about Baas? You’ve used twin swords before."

Baas did not take his eyes off the swords. "Yeah, I’ve used NORMAL twin swords. But I’ve never used anything like these before."

Sheina did not understand. Jaloer’s twin swords seemed exactly like the ones she was holding.

Jaloer was confused too, but for a different reason.
"You... can tell what’s so special about these swords? Just by looking at them?"

"Yeah." Baas said excitedly. "The way you’ve made it. The upper edge of the blade is heavier than the middle of the sword. This way, when you slice, the sword basically helps you flow. And the way the blades curve in as they head toward the middle. You did make this, right?"

Jaloer nodded slowly.

"Way to go." Baas congratulated. "You’ve perfected the twin swords."

"Baas," Sheina asked, "How did you know all that?"

"Analysis, Sheina." Baas said as though it were common sense. "As Leaders, it’s what the Center taught us to do best."

Baas then turned back to Jaloer. "So can I see them?"

"Well..." Jaloer said startled by the fact that Baas could see his quality of his weapons. "I would say yes, but these aren’t mine anymore." Jaloer then smiled. "I’m letting your friend here have them."

"What?!" Sheina said shocked.

"They’re a gift, from me to you. The way you use your swords is breathtaking. I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to have them." Jaloer then put the swords out for Sheina to grab.
"They’re the perfect looking swords, for the perfect looking fighter."

Sheina was speechless. Such special swords. Did she really deserve something like this?

"I... I don’t know what to say."

"Say yes." Baas said smiling. "That’s what I’d say if I were you. And then, I’d let my good buddy Baas borrow them. You could do some serious moves with those things."

Sheina dropped the swords in her hand and took the others from Jaloer. She spun one. It spun faster than she was used to. Indeed, the swords amplified her slicing ability by their weight distortion. She wondered how she could learn the full effects of having weapons such as these. She then looked at Baas, and knew there was a way to find out.

"Alright Baas." She said. "Knock yourself out."
Sheina then tossed the swords to Baas.

Baas caught the swords. He grew so excited, he was almost shaking. Sheina and Jaloer stood back to see what would come out of this excited teen.

Baas started out slowly. He let out a simple vertical slice with the sword in his right hand. He wanted to get the feel of the weapons. There was another simple slice with the other sword. Though Sheina and Jaloer couldn’t tell, Baas was calculating something in his head. After the calculations were done, he was ready. Baas took the sword in his right arm, and tossed it as high as he could. The sword sailed higher and higher up into the air. Sheina didn’t realize how strong Baas was. Soon though, the sword began to make its decent back toward Baas. Baas then took the other sword, and threw it in a similar fashion. The left sword going up collided with the right sword coming down. Spinning, the two swords were now both falling with the right sword closer to the ground. Baas waited and waited and waited. When the sword was close enough, he spun his body, without moving his left foot, to grab the sword. In the same spin, he used the sword as a bat to hit the handle of the other sword that was following it. The sword spun rapidly toward the weapons building. It was now stuck in there with Baas keeping his batter’s stance. Sheina and Jaloer were astounded by what they had seen.

"Awsome!" Baas said smiling. "When you perfect the short sword and shield, let me know. These work great. They’re perfectly sharp and balanced."

Jaloer, gathered his wits together and tried to keep the conversation going. "Well… I don’t... uh... think I can. I only worked on these because twin swords are the most natural looking weapons for humans."

"Twin swords?" Baas asked confused. "No way. The most natural looking is the short sword and shield."

"What!?" Jaloer was heavily interested in the conversation now. He had thought long and hard about this. He knew exactly what to say. "The twin swords make the body symmetrical. Symmetry is a natural feature for humans. And the swords provide a perfect balance of offense and defense."

"That may be true." Baas said assuredly. "But the short sword and shield offer balance. The twin swords may have both good defense and offense together, but they appear as though they are only for offense. When you look at the appearance of a guy carrying a short sword and shield, you can tell he’s ready for both offense and defense. So if we’re talking in a matter of appearance, the short sword and shield look the most natural on a fighter."

Jaloer could not argue. Never, NEVER, in his many times of thinking about this subject had he considered this. He began to ponder and mutter to himself different things.

Sheina was still stunned from the display she had seen Baas do. The twin swords were her best technique, yet she knew she couldn’t do something like that. Throwing swords up, using them as bats, calculating every move. Baas really had a gift.

"Sheina? Wig to Sheina." Baas said snapping Sheina out of her thoughts. "Here you go."

He handed her back the weapons. "As much as I had fun, I think I’ll stick with my own weapons. Plus, these look better on you."

Sheina stared at the weapons Baas had handed her. She began to ponder. Was she really worthy of being on this team? Baas was so much better than her, and he didn’t even want to use those weapons. And that was just Baas. Atsuma, Koroko, and Pandora were all above him. How would she ever catch up to this group of people? What was her gift?

Baas had seen Sheina’s spirit fall. Though she hadn’t made it obvious, Baas was sure she was upset. He didn’t know how, but he also knew exactly why she was upset. How didn’t matter to him though. He just wanted to cheer up his friend.

Sheina suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. "Hey." Baas said. His soft smile had returned. "Thanks Sheina."

Sheina was confused "For what Baas? I didn’t do anything."

"Are you kidding me?" Baas asked truly shocked at Sheina's words. "If you weren’t here, I would have never gotten to use those swords. I doubt... uh... what’s his face?"

"Jaloer."

"Jaloer, would have let me use those swords. It’s cause I’m not disciplined like you are. You seem to be the most well balanced person in Orange, and everyone can see it. That’s why everyone treats you like you’re a jewel. They know how valuable you are."

Sheina smiled softly. How did Baas always know what to say when she was feeling down? It was like he could read her mind.
Sheina felt her grip tighten on the swords. There was indeed something special about her. Just like there was something special Baas. The only difference between them, was that Baas applied his talents in battle. Sheina would just have to find a way to do that.

"Well, look who it is." Everyone turned to see Atsuma emerging from the weapons building. Altea and Eltin were following closely behind him.

"Baas, how is it that you’re always around right when I need you?"

This brought Baas’ curiosity up.
"You need something Ats?"

Atsuma smirked. "Not really. I have something for you. A little... gift."
Atsuma then held up the white shoes Sheina had seen him wearing earlier.

Baas loved gifts. They were one of many things that got him excited.
"Are those for me?" He said in a high pitched manner to make the moment funny.

"Indeed they are. Check it out, I laced the bottom with metal..."
Atsuma could feel Altea glaring at him in the back of his head.
"I mean, I asked Altea to lace the bottom with metal. Makes the bottom of your shoes shine in the sunlight."

"That's awesome!"

Atsuma put the shoes on the ground. "Here try them on."

Baas hurried to put the shoes on. Atsuma put out his hand to stop Baas in his tracks.
"But, before you do, promise me that you’ll keep these shoes on. Unless you’re bathing, or a life’s in danger, I want to see these on your feet. Altea went through a lot of hard work to make you these and I don’t want to see that go to waste."

Baas, overexcited about the situation, agreed.

Atsuma smirked. "Good."

Baas took off his old shoes, put them to the side, put his feet inside the new shoes, pulled the backs up and smiled with pride.

Atsuma returned the smile with his everlasting smirk. "I’m glad you like them. You may find that they’re the hardest part of war."

Baas was confused. What did Atsuma mean by that? These were awesome shoes.

Atsuma began to walk away up the trail. Eltin followed.
Jaloer, whom had been murmuring to himself this whole time, came over to Altea.
"Can I talk to you for a sec. I need your help with something."
The two left heading back inside.

Sheina walked over to Baas and observed his new shoes.

Baas continued to smile. "Well, everyone’s just in a gift giving mood today."

Sheina smiled back. She then twirled her new swords in her hands.
"I’m going to go try these babies out."

"Can’t wait to see..." Baas tried to move his feet. He couldn’t. He tried again. He couldn’t lift his feet.

"Uh... Sheina!" It was too late. Sheina had left to practice with her swords.

Baas continued to struggle to lift his feet. He could barely get them off the ground. One step with his right foot took all his energy.

"So that’s what he meant." Baas said to himself. "He can never just say, ‘Hey Baas, these shoes will help you train and get stronger.’ No, instead he’s always trying to trick me. I guess he gets a laugh out of seeing what happens."
Baas chuckled to himself. "I can’t blame him for that though. I couldn’t stop laughing when those losers fell for that water contraption."

"So we noticed." came a voice. Baas looked up from his shoes to see the six guys he had been running from earlier.

Baas gave a nervous laugh.

"So you think you can just play a prank on us... what was it you said? Losers? And just run away?"

Baas had been mumbling to himself again. He still hadn’t stopped doing that yet.

Upon seeing the group, Baas began to think. There was a small opening between all of them. All he had to do was psych them out and he could escape. Baas tried to lift up his feet to run.

...

Oh yeah. They were in heavy metal bottomed shoes.

Baas' feet felt as though they were glued to the ground. So long as he had those shoes on, he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Six on one. There was no way he’d be able to win a fight like this. Baas reached down to take the shoes off. Then he stopped himself. He thought about the situation he was in. He then, stood up tall with a smug look on his face.

"Hey guys. I’m sorry. It was just a joke."

"Well," Said the one closest to Baas with a smile, "what if some people can’t take a joke?"

"Well then." Baas said gaining a smirk. "That’s okay too, since I’m not one to back down from a good fight."

The comment and the smirk caused the group’s anger to flare. They all at once rushed in at Baas. Baas stood his ground and readied his fists.

One from the left. Another from the right. One from below. Another from above. Fists were coming everywhere for Baas’ body. He tried to block and fight back, but there was no way to fight like this.
The guys of Orange were upset, but they began to realize what they were doing. The eldest of the group held his hand up to signal the others to stop. He began talking.

"Wait guys wait." He then turned toward Baas. "Why don’t you move around? Not that you don’t deserve this, but standing there getting beat up is just moronic."

Baas took a moment to catch his breath. "You’re... not the first one to call me that. Besides I can’t move... because.... it’s not okay to lie."

The group did not understand. They were waiting for the eldest to make his decision.

"Listen. I’m not gonna sit here and beat you up if you’re not gonna fight back. That takes all the fun out of it. Don’t just stand there and take it you coward. Fight back."

"Coward? I’m not afraid of you. And who said I wouldn't fight back? In fact, I’ll bet I could withstand a fight with all six of you guys without even moving from this spot."

The guy clenched his fists hard. He had made his decision. There would indeed be a fight.
"You know, you have a knack for saying the absolute wrong thing."

"I know." Baas said with a smile "It’s a gift of mine."

Altea doesn't talk, but still gets her point across. I just noticed that... very interesting characterization.

Jaoler appears to be one of those people obsessed with symmetry. Symmetry is rumored to be something that attracts a lot of people, and it appears to have drawn him to Sheina. I wonder if that will go anywhere?

Poor Baas... he didn't escape because they gave him heavy shoes to train with. They're probably going to beat him up, just because they got soaked. It looks like some people really can't take a joke. :(

Commander Cham is not missing. If you read the full updates you know he is still there but RP is talking about what happened to Baas and Sheina in the meantime ;)

Ahh, I was wondering when the next chapter would come. I'm a little late, and I'm sorry about that, but better late than never is what I say. And man, I love the comedy between Baas and Sheina. So hilarious!

"You dare underestimate the power of my comedy?"

"No, I dare underestimate the power of your brain."

Anyways, not much happens, but it's nice and entertaining. Now, for my special fanmade cliffhanger.

What will happen between Jaloer and Sheina? Will Sheina stay faithful to Baas or will she go after Jaloer? What will become of Baas? Will his training prove successful and make him faster than ever, or will it just tear at his muscles? How will Baas get out of this mess? And most importantly, what did their faces look like when they got soaked? Find out next time on Wig. Or. LOG!!

Chapter 31 : The Battle Plan

Atsuma, Eltin and Cham entered the room all at the same time. The extremely large area was empty for now, but soon it would fill with people. This room was rarely used as there was rarely a time when so many people needed to be involved in a meeting. But for the kidnapping of a Commander, Cham felt it was necessary to get as many Leaders as he could.

Atsuma gazed at the large cave. Toward his left was a stage like structure with a long table that stretched across and chairs that were set up. That’s where the important people sat. Because he had been there when Vanessa was kidnapped, for this meeting Atsuma would be considered important. Next to him would be Cham, whom would be directing the meeting. Next to Cham would be Eltin. Eltin was Cham’s right hand man, so he was always sitting next to him during important meetings.

The rest of the Leaders involved would be sitting in the audience area. There were some 1000 chairs set up. Atsuma guess not all of them would be used. Even though, there were much more than that number of Leaders in Orange, accounting for how many had a reputation big enough to be in the meeting and how many of those were actually in the base made Atsuma doubt that they would have a full house.

As the three moved toward the front, other Leaders followed and began to fill the room as well. Some were curious as to what the meeting would be about. Some were upset that they had to go to a meeting right after a mission. And still others were simply nonchalant.

Atsuma reached his chair and sat down. He stared at the crowd as it came into the large room. He wished they would hurry up. Vanessa had been missing for over a week now. Anything could have happened to her with that amount of time gone by. He was ready to take his sword and lead the charge to rescue her and the only thing standing in his way was a meeting on how to do it. As he glared angrily at everyone who moved slowly, his leg began to bounce impatiently. Cham noticed this action and could tell what was happening.

"Mr. Atsuma. A little patience if you will."

Atsuma crossed his arms and kept his angry glare at the audience. "We don’t have time for patience Cham. Vee’s still out there in who knows what kind of trouble. She’s been gone for a week and rather than rescuing her immediately, we came back here to discuss how we would do it. I think I’ve been patient enough, don’t you?"

"You can never be too patient Mr. Atsuma. If you don’t start now, it may harm you during this meeting. And it‘s Commander Cham."

Atsuma sucked in his teeth. More meaningless wisdom from some elder person who thought they knew everything. Eltin could see Atsuma’s impatience and could tell that as long as it came from Cham, he would not listen. He decided he would give it a try.

"Atsuma, just try to stay calm. I know you want to rescue her immediately, but Cham wasn’t made Commander because of his proper etiquette. He gets results. So I’m sure he has a good reason for all the time we’ve taken up."

Atsuma’s look did not change. He did not care what Eltin had to say. The only thing he cared about was finishing this pointless meeting so he could rescue Vanessa.

Soon the meeting room was filled with people and noise. Atsuma had been wrong. All the chairs were filled and there were even plenty of people standing. Cham’s plan to wait three days had worked as there were many more Leaders at the planned meeting than there would have been at an immediate one.

Cham looked around and decided the time to wait was over. He stood up and cleared his throat. Upon seeing this, everyone in the room quieted down and turned their attention to the front. The Commander was about to speak and he would be heard.

"Thank you all for coming to this meeting. I realize that some of you are tired from previous missions, but as you can tell from the size of the audience, there is a matter of great importance going on. Normally, I make the decisions of what to do during all missions, but I feel as though this is a matter for all of Orange to discuss. What I’m about to tell you, I do not want to hear discussed outside of this room. The last thing we need is a panic from the Nears, Fars, and inexperienced Leaders. You are here because you can help make an accurate judgment of the situation. I’m sure many of you recognize mister Atsuma from the first base. He will be giving you the details of this grave situation. Mister Atsuma."

Atsuma stood up from his chair. He decided to calm himself, and not act his usual joking way. He made sure to speak loud and clear. He wanted to make sure everyone knew what was happening.

"Thank you Commander Cham. About a week and a half ago, the two major bases of Orange united in one effort to capture a major part of what used to be blue territory. We’ve done this numerous times before. However, for her own personal reasons, the Commander of the first base, Vanessa, decided to join my team on this mission. Though we succeeded in our mission, when the smoke had settled, it was discovered that Vee was missing. In searching for her, a team mate of mine found her tattered cape in the woods."

Atsuma took the cape on the table and unfolded it for all to see.

"We can clearly assume that Vee was in some kind of struggle and has been kidnapped."
The room grew a little loud as people began to discuss. Atsuma understood this, but he was low on patience so he continued to speak.

"We have two suspects as to who would have captured her. On our way to the mission sight, my team met with a mysterious character dressed in all black. He goes by the name of Diablo and is much stronger than any opponent we have met before. He had his band covered, so we don’t know what country he belongs to. When we confronted him about the matter, he claimed innocence but his mystique still leaves me suspicious. The second suspect we have is a clue my team mate found. Before he found the cape, he was tracking a mysterious grey band. It can be assumed that this grey band knows something. These are just the clues we have, but there could be other explanations. What we’ve come to discuss at this meeting is, how do we approach rescuing Vee..."

"If I may interrupt." Cham said standing back up. "That is not the entirety of the situation Mr. Atsuma." Cham turned back to the audience.
"Before we can discuss on how we can save Commander Vanessa. We must discuss something else. At times like these, we must realized that we have lost Commanders before. Though a situation where they have been kidnapped is extremely rare in our case, we have still had Commanders killed. But, as we think about our comrade in danger, we must remember that the war goes on. Can we really say the safety of one person is worth sending our units out to look for her, when they could be doing more valuable things with their time? Before we can discuss how to rescue Commander Vanessa, we must first discuss whether or not we should rescue her."

Atsuma gave Cham and angry and confused look.

"What?"

**********************

Koroko stood leaned up against the cave wall with his arms crossed. His index finger on his right hand continued to tap his arm. Every now and again he would sigh without opening his mouth. Pandora wished he would stop doing that. It wasn’t making the situation go any faster. Though she wasn’t sure if she was getting impatient at him, or getting as impatient as him. The two were in a medium sized cave room with two openings. One opening led to a hall, which led to the meeting room where Atsuma, Eltin and Cham were. This was the only way to get to that room. The other led toward a stair hallway that led a room connected to the outside.

After another 5 minutes of waiting, Koroko finally began to speak what was on his mind.

"‘Guard the door’ he says. ‘Make sure only Leaders come in’ he says. Really, does Cham think we’re idiots? As if guarding the door will make up for the fact that we’re not in the meeting."

Pandora understood Koroko’s anger but she was suppose to be the patient one.

"It’s not his fault Koroko, what was he suppose to do? Only Leaders can make decisions like these."

"Well that’s not right. Vee’s our friend too, Panda. Just because Atsuma can make a superb battle strategy doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be allowed to see it."

"I’m sure you’ll have a fabulous time if you run in there and try to convince that to Commander Cham. Just be patient Koroko. Complaining about the meeting isn’t going to make it go any faster."

Koroko was about to respond but he stopped. The two could now here a loud voice coming from down the hall where the meeting was taking place. Before they could make out what it was, the sound came to them. Atsuma was being dragged by his arms out of the cave by four Leaders, one of which was Eltin. Atsuma wasn’t going peacefully either.

"Let me go! Let me go! I’ll show that no good, glory wanting..."

The four threw Atsuma to the ground. The sight made both Koroko and Pandora twitch.

The others Leaders, save Eltin, went back into the hall. Atsuma quickly tried to follow but Eltin kept him back. Atsuma gave Eltin a deadly stare.

"Let me go back Eltin."

"You know I can’t do that Ats. You need to calm down."

"CALM DOWN!? How can I calm down after what he said?!"

"Atsuma what happened?" Pandora asked.

"That... selfish butt Commander Cham made a suggestion that we not even attempt to rescue Vee. I traveled a week to get here. Waited for THREE DAYS just like he asked, and he throws this in my face!? I did everything he asked for and I‘m not gonna sit back and let him do this to Vee!"

Atsuma tried to rush back in, but Eltin held him back again.

"Move Eltin. I’ll fight you if I have to and I will win."

Eltin was beginning to lose his patience for his friend.
"Yes mister tough guy. You can beat me. You can beat any Leader in Orange one on one. We know that. But what are you gonna do when you start a fight with one of the Commanders of while 1000 of his best Leaders are watching? Do you think you can beat them all Ats? HUH!? DO YA?"

"Cham is..."

"OUR COMMANDER is just going over all the angles. It’s why he was made Commander in the first place Ats. He wants to get results. He never said it was absolute that we wouldn’t save Commander Vanessa. In fact, I bet he didn’t think anyone would even agree with him."

"He’s crazy to have even brought it up."

"Atsuma, did you hear yourself in there? Commander Cham made a calm suggestion and as the Commander he has every right to do so. You’re the one who jumped up and started screaming and insulting him. Who sounds more crazy Ats? The guy making a calm suggestion or the one screaming at the top of his lungs?"

Atsuma was breathing hard now. He stared Eltin in the face with his deadly gaze. Then, he looked away. Eltin was right. Atsuma moved away from him and pushed his arm up against the wall. Eltin wanted to comfort his friend, but he had no time.

"I’ve got to get back to the meeting. Stay here and be calm. When we decide something, you’ll be the first to know."

Eltin left to return to the meeting. Atsuma took a deep breath. There was nothing more he could do.

The three waited impatiently in that room for another two hours. Atsuma was now sitting on the floor. He was ready to fall asleep. The only thing that kept him awake was the thought that the meeting could be over anytime soon. Koroko was still standing leaning up against the wall. His arms were crossed and his eyes were closed but you could tell he was still awake. Pandora had attempted to fall asleep, but she was having trouble. With no bow near her, she couldn’t feel as relaxed as she usually was. She could have gone down to get a bow, but there was always a chance that the meeting would end and she wanted to hear the results as soon as she could. So the three waited there bored. It was silent for a good while. Someone might clear their throat. Someone might sneeze. But for the most part, it was quiet. Then, without warning, Koroko let out a simple chuckle. It soon grew into a giggle. Then a never ending laugh.

Atsuma raised an eyebrow and smirked at his friend.
"What’s so funny?"

In the midst of his laughter, Koroko attempted to answer.

"Remember the last time we went on a mission and got separated from Vee? Only thing was, we were the ones lost, not her. So we tried to *snicker* we tried to find a grey territory so we would be safe, but *snicker* but we didn’t know where to go. So Panda starts panicking and starts running down a hill and she *snicker* and she *snicker* and she slips and falls and rolls right into a mud puddle."

By now Koroko wass back to laughing hysterically. Atsuma began to remember the story too. Soon, a big smile spread across his face. Then came the chuckle. Then the giggle. And then, he too, was consumed by laughter.

Pandora did not find it funny. She had been quite embarrassed at the time. But her teammates’ laughter was so continuous that eventually, she began to laugh as well. It was a nice change of atmosphere. The three laughing just like they had always done.

"Speaking of funny moments." Atsuma said calming down. "Where’s Baas?"

Koroko spoke up, now calm from his laughter. "Where do you think? Training."

Atsuma nodded. That made sense knowing Baas. "And where’s the Squirt?"

Pandora had the answer to this one. "Where do you think? Babysitting Baas."

Atsuma nodded. That made sense knowing Baas. He laughed at that thought.

The three looked up toward the hall. They could hear noises coming from further in. A sound of many people talking at once. The meeting was over.

Atsuma stood up ready. He had realized he was indeed wrong to jump at Cham like that. He was now cool and collected.

Soon, many Leaders began to emerge from the hall. Because there were so many, the line was moving slowly. Some of them glanced up at Atsuma. Some gave him a nasty look. Atsuma didn’t care. He wasn’t one who got upset when others thought down on him. Besides, he was looking for some specific people.

Finally, Eltin came out of the hall. Atsuma did not notice the distraught look on his face.

"Hey Eltin. You were right. I was out of line. I guess Cham was just trying to cover all the angles. I’m sorry."

Eltin gave Atsuma a friendly smile. "I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses."

Atsuma smirked. "Yeah, I guess with Vee gone and all this time..."

"You don’t have to explain." Eltin interrupted. "I get it."

Atsuma was glad. But he was also anxious.
"So... uh... when are we going to get Vee? What exactly is the battle plan?"

Eltin sighed without opening his mouth. What he had to say would be hard, but he had to say it.

"Listen Atsuma. The majority of the group agreed with Commander Cham."

Atsuma gave a confused look.
"What?"

"I mean, there isn’t going to be a rescue. The Leaders agreed that it isn’t worth Orange’s time and resources to rescue someone whom we have no idea where they are."

Atsuma was having a hard time comprehending exactly what he was hearing. He tried to keep his cool.

"That... that makes absolutely no sense. What are we going to do without a Commander?"

"We have a Commander mister Atsuma."
The crowd of people exiting the hall was getting less and less as the people had increased their speed. Now there were only a few Leaders who remained. Though some were just being curious, one of the Leaders was the one who had spoken up. Commander Cham.

Atsuma gave Cham a deathly stare.
"You’re the Commander of here. Not of the first base."

Cham was not threatened in the least.
"Regardless of how you feel mister Atsuma, Commander Vanessa and I share the same rank..."

"But you can’t keep order in both bases."

"Indeed you are right mister Atsuma. This is why it has been decided that I shall go over to the first base to oversee who shall become the new Commander."

"New Commander? NEW COMMANDER!?"

Atsuma jumped forward in an attempt to grab Cham. Cham didn’t see the attack coming. Fortunately for him, the few other Leaders that were there did. Two of them grabbed Atsuma by his arms to hold him back. Atsuma was proving to be too much for them though so a third Leader punched him in the stomach to relieve him of his energy. The tension in Atsuma’s body was released.

"I don’t care if you are a hotshot, you don’t attack our Commander.” The one who punched him said.

Atsuma was still trying to speak in between taking breaths.

"So... this is why you... wanted to come here Cham... You needed your loyal lackeys to back you up."

The one who punched Atsuma got angry at being called a lackey. He bawled his fist up and brought it back for another punch. He tried to bring it forward but something stopped his fist. The Leader looked back to see Koroko holding his fist and Pandora standing right behind him.

"Protecting your Commander is one thing,” Koroko said seriously, “ attacking my friend out of anger is another. If you think his words hurt, wait until you see what we can do with our fists."

The Leader backed away. Forcing his fist from Koroko’s grip, he gave him an angry stare as though saying he wasn’t afraid.

"Everyone calm down." Eltin said taking control.

"Indeed mister Eltin." Cham nodded affirmatively. "This behavior is quite uncivilized. We are all part of the same country."

"You sure don’t act like it!" Atsuma shouted.

"I understand your frustration mister Atsuma, but we can not let our feeling get in the way of logic. We don’t know where Commander Vanessa is. The only clue we have is a mysterious man and a grey band whom we aren’t allowed to attack. I did indeed bring you here because I knew those of the first base would appeal more to emotion than they would to reason. I would hope that in my absence, Commander Vanessa would do the same. But the fact remains, I will be heading over to the first base to oversee the initiation of the new Leader. Because you are such an influence in Orange, I hope that you will see past your own grudges and help me in deciding the next Commander. But know that my decision is final. I have talked with the Leaders of Orange and we all agree. No Orange is to make a rescue attempt of Commander Vanessa so long as I am making the rules."

And with that Cham exited the room and went down the stairs.

Atsuma sucked in his teeth. He couldn’t believe this. There was no way he could just let Vanessa go. According to what Diablo had said, she was in serious trouble. But so long as Cham was breathing, there was nothing he could do about that.
...
Or was there?

Atsuma looked at the two still holding his arms.
"I think it’s safe to let go now." He said calmly.

"Nu uh." The one holding his right arm said. "Not until we know you’re completely calm."

Atsuma had lost all his patience.
"I said... LET GO!"

Atsuma backed up with the two still holding on. The Leaders hit up against the wall that was behind them. They still were holding on to Atsuma arms though. Now close to the wall, Atsuma lifted both legs up and used the wall to flip his body in the air. The Leaders turned with his arms. The disorientation made it so that they could no longer hold on. They both found themselves flat on their backs. Atsuma was now free.

The one who had punched Atsuma came forward in an attempt to subdue him. Before he could make it though, he tripped. The guy looked back and saw Koroko. He gave him an angry stare.

Koroko gave him a confused looked. "What are you looking at me for?"

The man then turned. He had not seen her before, but behind Koroko was Pandora with her foot sticking out. She gave the man on the floor a smirk.
"Oops." was all she said.

The only one standing besides the three was Eltin now. He knew he couldn’t beat this team and he wasn’t even about to try. But he could still reason with them.

"Atsuma, please." He said calmly. "Don’t make a big ruckus."

Atsuma gave Eltin a smirk. "When have I been known to do something like that?"
Atsuma then hurried out of the exit.

One of the Leaders who had been flipped over tried to stand up.

"Eltin. Are you really just gonna let him go like that?"

Eltin simply shrugged. "What was I suppose to do? Had I tried to stop him, I would be lying right next to you."

Eltin then smiled at Pandora and Koroko. "Beside, I know Ats. He may be angry, but he wouldn’t do something stupid."

Suddenly, a loud scream was heard from the exit.

"What was that?" One of the Leaders asked.

"It sounded like Commander Cham." Another said.

Eltin made a worried face.
"Atsuma you didn’t..."

Eltin, Pandora and Koroko quickly left the room. The other three were left helping each other up.

The three hurried down the stairs. They weren’t sure what they would find, but it was a scary thought seeing as Atsuma had just left in anger and the scream came from Cham. Eltin really hoped it wasn’t what he thought it was.

Soon, just before reaching the end, the three reached Atsuma. His arms crossed and his eyes closed. His infamous smirked rested on his face.

"Atsuma!" Eltin said worried. "What happened!?"

"You got eyes, don’t you?" Atsuma said still smirking. "Look for yourself."

The group looked out the exit of the stair hallway. There was Cham standing in shock. His outfit was completely wet. A bucket of water on the floor.

"You know... it’s not as funny the third time." Came a voice. "I’ll have to start thinking of something better."

Everyone looked to the left of the room. There was Baas. His head rested on his arms which were against the wall. He looked a little… beat up. But there was still a huge smile on his face.

Looking at Cham and Baas, Koroko and Pandora began to understand what happened. Eltin did not know, but he went over to help out Cham.

"By the way Atsuma." Baas went on. "It took me FOREVER to set that up thanks to your wonderful little present."

Atsuma continued to smirk. "Be thankful you even could. I was trying to make it so you couldn‘t walk at all."

"It didn’t work like I wanted it to though. I don’t know why, but when that large amount of people came, none of them activated it. Even though some of them still tripped over the rope. I guess it needed a bunch of tugs before it worked properly."

"Oh no." Another voice suddenly let out. Entering the room from another entry came Sheina. She was outside wondering why so many people had left one area. Looking inside she saw Cham and rushed in to help him. She could guess who was the cause this.

"I am so sorry Commander Cham. I guarantee I know who did this. He’s probably run off by now. Don’t worry. I’ll get him."

Baas was worried and at the same time relieved. He knew Sheina was a force to be reckoned with, but she had not seen him when she ran in. He slowly lifted his leg to leave before she noticed him. He could only lift it about an inch from the ground because of the heavy bottom, but it was enough to get him moving. As long as he stayed quiet, he could avoid the wrath that was Sheina. He took one step and then...

*clink*

When his shoe hit the ground, the metal made a noise upon impact.

Sheina turned around to see what the noise was. Her eyes met Baas’.

Baas felt his heart stop. What would happen next? He put one hand behind his head and smiled widely, laughing nervously as he spoke.

"Hey Shein..."

*Punch*

Sheina punched Baas in the face hard. Baas felt the sting in his cheek. It was one of the many things he was afraid he would feel. Sheina grabbed Baas by the collar and began shaking him.

"WHY BAAS!? WHY CAN’T YOU BE CIVILIZED!?"

Baas left out another nervous laugh.
"Did anyone ever tell you how pretty you are when you’re angry?"

"Yes Baas. You do all the time. Because I’m always ANGRY AT YOU!"

Baas continued to smile. Sheina pulled back her fist to punch him again. Then, she noticed how beat up he was. She let go of his collar and began to speak normally.

"Baas, what happened to you? Why are you so beat up?"

Baas examined himself.
"What this? Nothing. It’s just a joke that went a little too far yesterday."
Baas’ smile did not leave from his face.

Atsuma and Koroko were cracking up at Sheina and Baas exploits. Meanwhile, Pandora had made her way over to Cham to help him out.

"Are you okay Commander Cham? Please excuse Baas. He has trouble containing the jokester inside of him."

Cham patted himself down with a cloth he had gained from his pocket.

"Quite alright miss Pandora. It’s not his fault. He needs to be properly trained, as all fighters do."

"Don’t worry about that." Atsuma said with a smirk. "He’ll be trained."

"Yes he will." Cham said affirmatively. "Like everyone else."

The smile left both Baas’ and Atsuma’s face.

"What do you mean by that." Baas asked.

"I mean, young man, that you will not go on another mission until you have spent enough time training. Seven years should do it. Just like everyone else."

"Seven years!?" Baas said shocked.

"Hold on now." Atsuma interjected. "The last thing Vee did before she disappeared was leave that kid to me and..."

"And as the only acting Commander now, I’m saying he is no longer under your care. Sheina is also to return to inactive duty. I will not see fine young warriors being sent out into the world unprepared as a gimmick."

Cham turned back to Baas and Sheina. "You may both either choose to stay here in the second base or be escorted back to the first. But you will not go on another mission until an active Commander deems you worthy."

"But Cham..." Atsuma started.

"End of discussion." Cham said rather loudly. "Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some cleaning I have to attend to. Good day, mister Atsuma."
He then walked out of the room with his head held high.

The room was silent from the awkward news. No one knew exactly what to say.

Baas gave a rather confused look to Sheina.
"What... what just happened?"

Sheina had a very sad look on her face.
"We’re being sent back to square one."

"I... uh... I don’t think I can’t sit with that plan." Baas said trying to be somewhat funny.

"Neither can I Baas." Atsuma said. He left with a deathly stare on his face. In his mind, he was concocting a plan of his own. "Neither can I."

Chapter 31 End.
