Why is the Letter I Always Capitalized?

I just don't get it. A and I are the only two letters in the English language that are used as words, but a stand-alone A isn't capitalized while stand-alone I's are. I used to capitalize stand-alone A's because the I rule doesn't make sense unless A follows it too. Maybe there's a good answer there and someone can educate me on this. Why was it decided that I would follow this arbitrary rule and A won't, even though they are similar words?
