A little shy of 20 years ago, Nintendo handed the Zelda IP to Capcom, with what could be considered good results. Oracle of Seasons, Ages and The Minish Cap are well regarded within the Zelda community, some saying it's even better than Link's Awakening, the other original Game Boy game.

We've seen recent examples of handing out the IP to other developers with the Warriors games and Cadence of Hyrule. However, those have been spinoffs - great ones of course, but spinoffs nonetheless.

Then there's the remakes of course, with the developer Grezzo making excellent work with the games they've been entrusted with, as well as Tantalus doing the HD version of Twilight Princess.

But let's talk about a full-blown, mainline original 3D Zelda game. Who could do it? Will it be as good as Nintendo's games? And why?

I started playing Mario RPG again. It got me to thinking about how interesting and even fun a turned based Legend of Zelda RPG could. Nintendo could collaborate with Dragon Quest team at SquareEnix.

Falcom, without a doubt. Zelda would be fantastic with the mechanics and overall presentation of Falcom's games, Ys in particular. Story, characters, music, gameplay, etc.

The series could become so much more in the hands of a company as skilled as Falcom. Maybe it could actually reach its potential as opposed to what Nintendo has done for it so far.

That's a dream though. It'll never happen.

I can see SquareEnix doing solid work with the Zelda IP, especially if people from the FFVIIR team worked on it. Breath of the Wild has elements that make it feel like an action RPG so I full-on Zelda RPG Final Fantasy style could be interesting.

FromSoftware would be my obvious choice. The structure of the Soulsborne already resembles the Zelda "formula" with its use of bosses, more maze-like dungeons, and connected overworld. I'd argue that they've been developing a better Zelda game for almost ten years.

My second choice would be Obsidian, developer of games like Alpha Protocol and Pillars of Eternity. Among a Cyberpunk discord server I participate in, one of the running jokes is that if you want to make a franchise better just give it to Obsidian. Want a better Baldur's Gate? Obsidian makes Pillars of Eternity. A better Fallout? New Vegas. A better Mass Effect? Alpha Protocol.

So, I'd give Zelda to Obsidian. What could go wrong?
