I'm gonna put a spoiler prefix on this just to make sure... So anyway I think there is a quite a trend with having a game revolving around two main Villains, usually you have the sub villain and then the main villain.

Three of the most noticeable games that used this were A Link to the Past, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. In these games they featured very similar ideas of having, what we thought was the main villain, however soon enough it was revealed that these were mere puppets in the grand scheme. I'll keep it pretty brief here and leave it to you guys, so what game do you think executed the "two villain" idea the most effectively and why?

Probably A Link to the Past or Skyward Sword executed this concept the best, simply because they didn't throw in a villain at the last second like Twilight Princess did *COUGHCOUGHGANONDORFCOUGHCOUGH*. :bleh:

Between TP and SS. Agahnim...hardly even counts to me. He's just Ganondorf. In SS the villain had more role...but less character. In TP, the villain had more character, but less role. I still don't see how anyone could be shocked with Ganondorf coming at the end when Zant constantly told us....I guess this is why Nintendo took out the skip cutscene option for future games.

I like the way A Link to the Past did it. In the other games, it kinda seemed to me that sub villains were the main guys, and that you didn't really even know Ganon (or in the case of SS, Demise) was even apart of the story until you were half done. Their characters were still built up through what the sub villains said, but it didn't have the same affect. I simply like how ALttP did it because Agahnim wasn't too overpowering in the game's plot. He was there, yet it was still always about defeating the main villain, Ganon.

I voted for ALttP because Ganon wasn't just thrown in at the end like TP. We fought Ganon a few times throughout the story, he just wasn't himself. And then when you find out that Aghanim is Ganon, it makes Ganon seem more evil because he can transform into an evil dark wizard (No, not Voldemort), which allows him to escape from the sacred realm and reek havoc again.

^ So much this. I hated the way Ganondorf was introduced in TP. He was introduced with a flashback HALFWAY through the game. That's too late in the game to introduce a new villain without ruining the previously established villain's character. At the very least, mentioning that another villain is out there at an early point is good enough. Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks did this very well. Ghirahim and Cole's characters avoided being ruined this way.

I can't say anything about A Link to the Past because I've never played it. And you forgot to add Spirit Tracks to the poll; it has two main villains too. :O

TP- a cool and intimidating villain that beats you, but is later revealed to be a weird wimp-brilliant if they hadn't spoiled Ganondorf's presence too early.

SS- something I can't describe fights you the whole time-then you fight an awesome guy I wish I had been fighting the whole time.

Skyward Sword. The entire time, we knew something much, much more powerful than Ghirahim -- who had the power to catch a ****ing blade with his fingers -- was lying dormant, while in the meantime The Imprisoned was lurking on the horizon. Eventually it was revealed that The Imprisoned was Ghirahim's master, Demise, in a sealed state, but even in that state it had the power to destroy the world. Then at the end, BOOM, epic revival scene showcasing his badassery by ruthlessly making Ghirahim his sword, showing that's all he viewed him as... which Ghirahim didn't care about at all, shown by his laughter, because all he wanted was Demise to succeed.

That's buildup the entire game with an epic conclusion, ladies and gentlemen. A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess's dual villain plot points don't even come close due to how abrupt they are in the end.

Zant did say he had a "god" behind his power, so there wasn't a complete lack of foreshadowing towards Ganondorf. I've honestly never understood the complaints about his introduction. It was a big revelation, and it DID NOT ruin Zant. He already said his power wasn't his own. The problem is Ganondorf being introduced, then completely dropped until the tail end of the game.

I mentioned other games had this system as well but solely for this thread I wanted to focus on these three games due to their dual villain system being quite similar but if you want to mention Spirit Tracks that's fine ;)

That is way too vague. All he said was his new power was granted to him by his "God". That doesn't necessarily mean a villain. It could mean anything. Heck, I first interpreted it as magic and nothing else. If that's foreshadowing, then it's terrible foreshadowing. And, his introduction did ruin Zant. All that time Zant was being built up as the bad guy behind everthing, and then in one fell swoop, he's suddenly... not. If that isn't ruined, I don't know what is.

Revealing his power is not his own reveals that he's not behind everything, plain and simple. I... don't know how that can be any clearer.

I think Skyward Sword did it best. Because near the beginning, you always thought that Ghirahim was the main bad guy and near the end you find out that there's someone bigger and badder than him named Demise.
