What's Your Fandom Pet Peeve?

Fandoms. We're all in them. We wouldn't be on a Zelda forum if we werent. But, this is mainly for those of us who do more than just watch the movie/show/anime/etc, read the book, or play the game. If you produce and/or look at fan material, you're bound to come across something you absolutely hate and that happens frequently and in all fandoms. What is it for you? Try not to turn this into a debate thread...

I have a few pet peeves.

Badly done yaoi/yuri. Same sex pairings for those of you who don't know what that means(but I doubt there's very many fans of anything that do...) I'm not a homophobe! Not at all. I just don't like it when people take characters whose chances of actually being in a romantic relationship is less than zero, and put them in smut fics so they can drool. They can absolutely hate each other in canon, and all of a sudden they're banging each other. Admit it: this seems to happen much more often with yoai and yuri than with hetero pairings. It completely disrespects the characters, I know I wouldn't like it if I was put in bed with someone I either didn't know or who I considered my enemy. NOBODY would. Especially not fictional characters. I know they're not real but yeah...

People who make an OC just so they can pair them with a canon character. I know I've done OC x Canon! BUT, Cerai doesn't need Groose(or Boyd...since she was converted from a Fire Emblem OC) to be awesome. I created her as an alter ego for myself, but she's not used as a tool to make me feel like I'm actually in a relationship with the fictional Groose/Boyd. Do I wish they were real at times, knowing they would be perfect for me? Absolutely. But I don't obsess over it. And I certainly don't make that relationship the main point of my fanworks. And it makes sense! The personalities mix well. Some other OC x Canon pairings...not so much. You can tell the OC's creator just wants to live out their fantasy when you see that.

My major gripes with fandoms are bashing people for a certain ship they prefer (ships that aren't considered 'canon' even though the ship they support isn't canon at all), calling certain characters Mary Sues (as a hate term), pairing underaged characters with people that are much older than them, and making sex pictures in a franchise that's meant for children in the first place (I'm looking at you, FIM fandom).

Hm... fandom pet peeves. Well, it's mostly fanfiction pet peeves for me.

1) OOC = Out of Character. Yes, fanfiction is a medium that anyone can make an attempt at, and you can do whatever you want in it, but it really, really bothers me when people are half-assed about characterization. They take no time to actually study the character's personality, habits, speech pattern, etc. and instead empty the character of their established personality and just tacks on whatever they feel like.

2) Applying own habits/convictions to a character regardless of what is established. This can be little things, like having a character say "Oh my Gosh" instead of "Oh my God". I actually asked an author once why they did it, and they replied that they found it improper for the character to say "Oh my God" (I wish I was kidding). Sure, it's a minor thing, but for me who tend to hear the voices in the characters, it ends up "sounding" off when I know fully well it's not something the character would say/do.

3) "Let's put everyone in high school" - to this I just have to ask; really? Here we have an interesting world, filled with characters who are interesting thanks to their established backstory and life experience - and you want to reduce all that into a teen soap? I see this happen in every single fandom I've been a part of (and I've been a part of a lot)... and it's not just human character, either. I just want to ask each and every person who does this, why they then are part pf this particular fandom - and not one of the many teen-oriented fandoms out there, if all they're interested in is making everything a high school experience...

4) "These two people are in love, so let's have them say 'I love you' all the time" - Is there really no other way of showing that two people love each other? Can't it be said with actions instead of words? I love reading shipper-oriented stories, but it doesn't matter how well written it is otherwise, if the characters can't go a single minute without saying those three words, it ruins the story for me.

5) Porn speech - Now, I'm not really all that bothered with smut. I don't seek it out, nor do I avoid it. If it's in a story - fine. If it's not - I don't miss it. But if an author absolutely has to include smut in their stories, is it possible to have the characters communicate with each other without resorting to porn speech? Not everything needs to be accentuated with the f-word, you know. I just feel it cheapens the story - not that it describes characters being intimate, but rather that it's written so crudely you feel like you're reading the script of a porno rather than just a scene in a longer story...

6) Badly done Original Characters/Author Inserts. Original characters should feel as though they belong in that world, and they should be fleshed out properly, have a personality, preferably a backstory (although I've seen some good Original sideline characters who did well without us ever knowing their backstory). You know, feel three-dimensional. A badly done Original Character tends to be a shallow projection of the Author, usually meant to be a love interest for one of the main characters in order to fulfill the Author's own fantasy. This is not a good read for the rest of us, and I just wish those who write to fulfill their own fantasies just kept those stories to themselves...

Yeah... probably should stop there...

I know! I don't understand why My Little Pony got as popular as it did with people who aren't 5 year old girls...I know the creator is happy that her show appeals to more audiences than expected. But I don't think she would approve of all the pony porn.

Porn. Especially with the Sonic community. I get if you watch hentai or whatever, but watching a anthropomorphic hedgehog **** Rouge the bat or something is where there's something seriously wrong with you. That's called desperation.

I'd say desperation for anything that isn't a human or humanlike species. Or a human/humanlike species with another type of creature...like Saphira and Eragon for example. The term "dragon rider" doesnt mean that.

Yeah. The Sonic fandom tends to be pretty perverted.

That's what I don't get. I watch the show, but I honestly don't understand how MLP got so popular nowadays. FIM's a good show, but I rather it didn't have a large fandom due to how infamously vocal it is. As for the pony porn, I don't want to think about it. I've seen some very terrifying pictures of ponies ******* before.

My major pet peeve is when people will take an ordinary scene from a show, and then add their own fanfiction perspective on it. I'm sorry, but you just ruined that entire scene for me. I don't want to rewatch it thinking that as he looks into her eyes, he's thinking about all this, or as she gazes back, she's thinking of all of this. It annoys the hell out of me when people do that. Keep your fanfiction crap elsewhere please, no one needs to see that. Actually, now that I think about it, fanfiction in general bothers me. Good for authors expressing themselves and ****, but reading fanfictions ruins everything about a show for me, so I stay the hell away from it.

Also, I hate it when one fandom practically abuses another (I'M LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU SPN FANDOM; the way to treated beliebers was disgusting).

I have somethings I hate, however it isn't about fan material. Well, actually, ok, I have one gripe about fan material: People fangirling over children or characters who don't even look human. It's creepy, especially because it's usually my favorite characters that are targets for this. I mean really it disturbs me on so many levels.

When people criticise others for having different opinions, also the other way around, when people have unpopular opinions and try to force it down everyone's throats.

But if you stay away from fanfiction, does its existence really ruin anything for you?

Parent/child shipping- I have literally seen this in the Naruto community... I, myself, am I huge KushinaxMinato fan but I see fricken people ship Naruto and his own father or mother together. I mean, who the hell would do such things as that. One, it gross and disturbing. Two, it's making the parents seem like pedophiles to their own children. And three, you're turning a straight couple into either a yuri or yaoi couple, which bothers the living hell out of me.

Incest shipping- Ohohoho, as some of you may know about me, I'm a Rin and Len Kagamine fan and I totally hate the twincest between them. There has been arguments between the two if they're twins or if they are mirror images. I've done the research and they can be whatever you want them to be but Crypton officially said that they're not twins nor lovers. But the point I'm trying to make is the fact in some fanfictions I read( I do like reading them on occasions for some inspiration of my own), they make the Kagamines twins and make a whole lemon scene with them. It's disgusting, I rather see a concert of Justin Bieber(this is coming from a girl who wants to headshot that mofo) than read that disgusting ****. This not only applies to the Kagamine twins but to other people who obviously don't have a life that write this crap.

Porn- nuff said...it's not real love...just no...

MLP- why...why the hell make creepy as hell stuff about a show that's meant to be shown to little girls?

These are my major fandom pet peeves, but I do agree with some of the Yaoi and yuri coupling(I only ship few couples of each...not that many..rest I find highly disturbing)

I stay away from fanfiction, but it's not like it's completely out of my life. I'll go onto sites like tumblr, see a nice gif of a scene, and then a 30 paragraph long explanation about it. What's worse is that a lot of people don't tag that stuff, so what am I to do? I have this giant *** post on my dashboard that's hard to scroll by, because it's undeniably going to be reblogged by quite a few people -- people I'm following.

This is how I feel about the Beat x Rhyme ship (yes, it exists). I'm fine with yaoi & yuri ships, but incest ships? No, just no.
