What video games have made you cry like a baby?

Recently I was watching a TV show, which is rather rare for me as my grandfather insisted that mother nature was far more entertaining, and that it is, how it has spun out some of those most entertaining weirdos that dance around on the street. Anyway on the show was a statement from Roger Ebert, I'm sure most of you know who he is.

He stated Video games could never be art, now this isn't up for debate since we all know that video games certainly can be an art, especially when they make us feel such passion within our heart. Today I would like to focus on videogames that may have made you cry in the past. I admit that crying can occur often in a movie and not so much in a game but it has happened to me on many occasions. I literally cried through the entire walking dead games, both pulsating with an amazing story and characters.

So now I give you the reins of the thread my dear readers, please don't disappoint me.

Well, I hate to sound like a broken record, as this game has come up a lot recently, but Fragile Dreams ~Farewell Ruins of The Moon~ is a very emotionally charged game and some of the side stories and themes that get touched upon hit uncomfortably close to home.

I also agree with The Walking Dead. There is so much right with the story of that game and Clem manages to bring out a whole range of emotions during gameplay. Especially during the final episode of season 1.

To The Moon is another game with a really emotionally charged story and may have elicited a tear or two at certain points.

I'm sure there are many more I've missed, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

So far, none. No medium or art (book, movie, video game) has ever made me cry. I'm a heartless monster, I know.

That being said, of the games I have played that made me at least somewhat emotional, Skyward Sword probably did it the most. I felt legitimately angry and cheated when Impa prevented Link from reuniting with Zelda at the end of the Earth Temple, and sad when Fi left Link at the end of the game. So yeah.

Metal Gear Solid 4. Guns of the Patriots ending. My friend, a guy, watched the ending with no context or experience and balled his eyes out. I shed a tear myself.

Well I remember in Persona 3 there's a social link character by the name of
Akinari Kamiki. In the beginning he was depressed and bitter towards you but in reality he did those things because he knows he doesn't have much time to live due to his genetic disease. He has realized the finality of his death, and doesn't bother with denial or hope. Though he never finishes them, he finds solace in his books, and decides to write his own story about finding the meaning of life. Initially he is rather aloof as he hates being pitied for his illness, but quickly warms up to you. During the course of the social link, Akinari stops taking his medication, claiming that they were only speeding up the process, and that he needed to finish writing his story before he died. At the end of the social link, Akinari gives his notebook with his story in it to you to keep, with his final wish granted, he smiles and bids you a farewell, disappearing into the sunlight before your protagonist's eyes. If you visit the shrine on one of the final days of the game, you will meet Mrs. Kamiki, Akinari's mother. She reveals (on whichever day you visits her) that it would be Akinari's twentieth birthday if he were still alive. Akinari's mother laments that he couldn't live his adulthood, but before his death, Akinari thanked his mother for birthing him and taking care of him, and said was glad to be born. These words by Akinari give his mother the resolve to push forward in life. Akinari's mother then mentions the story Akinari was writing, and wonders if he gave you the notebook. Upon finding that he did, Akinari's mother is relieved; she knows his dream was fulfilled, and he reached his goal before he died. She vows to experience new things to tell her son on the day they meet together in the afterlife before parting from your character.
This social link, it moved me to tears.

The N64 games all did. My mum didn't let me play them when I had been a naughty boy and that made me cry.

a mystery inside of an enigma wrapped in a soft fuzzy blanket of I don't even know what
I'm such a freaking softie; it doesn't take much to elicit an emotional response from me. It might be easier to list games that didn't make me tear up in one way or another.

The Story Room from Super Mario Galaxy. That damned storybook gets me every time, and all the smiles died in Chapter Seven. Even the music itself is stupidly emotional. Another Mario game that gets me going is the entirety of Super Paper Mario.

Final Fantasy VI and
Celes' hopelessness in the World of Ruin, giving way to her despair driven suicide attempt. I really didn't expect it, nor did I expect to watch Cid die.
The love triangle between Locke, Rachel and Celes was masterfully done, too. Honorable nods to other Final Fantasy games that made me cry go to Crisis Core, Type-0 and IX.

Persona 3 is another one that breaks me every time, and it always happens when October 4th rolls around in-game.
Shinjiro has been aware of Ken's vendetta against him the entire time (Shinjiro's Persona went out of control a year prior to the events happening now and accidentally killed Ken's mother in the same plaza they're standing in), and Shinjiro had no intention of stopping him from exacting his revenge. However, he warns Ken that if he kept going like he was, he could end up like him. Ken's struggling to go through with his plan when Takaya shows up and fires a round at Ken. Shinjiro jumps in the way, taking the bullet for Ken and ultimately giving his life to protect him.

And if that wasn't hard enough, watching Akihiko grieve over Shinjiro was even worse. His voice actor did a fantastic job at conveying the amount pain he was in, earning a second round of tears. A there's a lot to choose from too, like Chidori sacrificing herself to revive Junpei, party members finding their resolution to fight or some of the social links. Even the ending and credits are hard hitters. When you play a story driven game for about 70 to 90 hours and are treated to an ending like that, well, it's hard not to get teary eyed.

The endings of the Mystery Dungeon games had me crying like a baby. Paper Mario Sticker Star was like the death of a good spinoff series so I cry every time I see the game. Skyward Sword's ending was also pretty emotional.
