Dungeons and Dragons. It is a famous tabletop roleplaying game, and the rules and structure of the game are often mimicked in modern roleplaying games (DragonAge, for example). Of course, the tabletop game is still very different than the video games.
What happens is you have a Dungeon Master, who basically controls the plot. You use dice (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20-sided) to determine stats, if you hit an enemy, and how much damage you did, as well as if an enemy hit you or not. There are books explaining the enemies, the races, the characters, etc. It takes a while getting used to the game, and certainly longer to become a DM. But it's very interesting, and no two games are ever alike.
