What Do You Normally Have Equipped?

Be advised that there are some minor spoilers ahead.

We're talking 3D Zeldas here, since you can have more than one equip in those games. Do you have set preferences or just do you just keep out what you need?

This is what I ALWAYS go by.

Middle Button-The game's namesake or important item.
Right Button-Bow and Arrows or best available projectile.
Left Button- Item that can stun enemies or be useful otherwise. And when I need a specific item, this is the button I use for it, then I put it away and take out my hookshot/boomerang again.

Examples:

Ocarina of Time:
C-Down: Ocarina of Time
C-Right: Bow and Arrows
C-Left: Longshot

Majora's Mask, in the Great Bay Temple:
C-Down: Ocarina of Time
C-Right: Bow and Arrows
C-Left: Zora Mask

The Wind Waker, while sailing:
Z: The Wind Waker
X: Bow and Arrows
Y: Sail

Twilight Princess:
Z: Midna, of course.
X: Bow and Arrows
Y: Gale Boomerang

This is what I always go by in 3D Zeldas and I never stray from it.

Dude, I totally agree with you. Often times, I feel naked unless I have the Bow equipped. I also put the Bow/"best available projectile" on Y/ C-stick left. When there are three item slots, I'll have my projectile button, a button with some sick ammo ("The Big Guns"), and whatever else I need in that individual game. Examples:

OoT (MM is basically the same):

C-stick left/Y button: Bow
C-stick down/Z button: The Ocarina OR Bombs OR Lens of Truth, etc.
C-stick right/X button: Bombs OR Din's Fire, etc.

WW (while sailing):

Y: Bow (sail)
Z: Magic Armor OR Grappling Hook (Bow)
X: The Wind Waker (same)

TP:

Y: Bow
X: Gale Boomerang OR Double Clawshot

I totally go random. Except I never put the Bow or Boomerang or any sort of projectile on the bottom. I Put the hook shot usually on the top or to the Left. Most of the time I just add stuff at random.

Typically I have

C left: Ocarina
C down: projectile (hookshot, bow 'n' arrows, slingshot)
C Right: Whatever item is most pertinent to the situation (in Majoras Mask I'll have whichever mask the dungeon uses most, or an item like the eye of truth in the shadow temple)

Middle- Bow and Arrow

It just depend's on what I want to use, but it is mosly those sub-weapon's.

Ocarina of Time:
Left-C: Everything else that does not belong to the other buttons. The Bow is usually kept here.
Down-C: Every item that can shoot except for the Bow. Deku Nuts count.
Right-C: The Ocarina of Time.

Majora's Mask:
Left-C: What I need at the moment.
Down-C: What I need at the moment. Usually the Bunny Hood, though.
Right-C: The only slot the Ocarina belongs to, but otherwise, what I need at the moment.

The Wind Waker:
Y: Grappling Hook to steal items!
X: Boomerang to stun enemies (and then steal items! XD).
Z: The Wind Waker.

The Wind Waker (sailing):
Y: Boomerang.
X: Sail.
Z: Bombs/Wind Waker if needed.

Twilight Princess (GC):
Y: Everything else.
X: Shooting items (Bow, Clawshots, Slingshot).

Twilight Princess (Wii):
Left D-pad: Nothing.
Up D-pad: Nothing.
Right D-pad: Nothing.
B: Empty Bomb Bag.

That's right! I have nothing equipped! The empty Bomb Bag is the only way I can have the last slot of the four slots empty, since you can only have three of them completely empty at a time. The Bomb Bag won't even do anything, so yeah. XD Whenever I go for another go at the Cave of Ordeals, I usually have the Double Clawshots on B and that's it. :p

My C button set up usually looks like this:

OoT Child
Left C - boomerang/deku sticks/deku nuts
Down C - slingshot/bombs
Right C - orcarina/masks/bottles/event items

OoT Adult
Left C - bow/megaton hammer
Down C - hookshot/bombs
Right C - ocarina/bottles/event items

MM
Left C - bow/deku sticks/great fairy sword
Down C - hookshot/bombs
Right C- ocarina/masks/bottles/event items

Slingshot used to go on left C like the bow but now I put it on down C, which makes it feels different, maybe better.

The pattern I normally follow depends on the controller. On the N64, C-left is my projectile or stun item while C-down is for any other weapon. C-right is for anything that's not used as a weapon. For Gamecube, Y is the projectile while X is for other weapons. Z in WW functions the same as C-right. For the Wii, B usually has the bow unless I need to use another item while down on the D-pad has either the clawshot or bombs.

Ocarina of Time

Left: Slingshot/Bow/Deku Nuts
Down:Boomerang/Hookshot/Bombs/anything that I need at that moment
Right:Ocarina/misc.

Wind Waker
Y: Bow
Z: Wind Waker
X: Everything else

Twilight Princess (GCN)
Y: Bow/Spinner/Ball and Chain
X: Clawshot/anything that I need at the time

Twilight Princess (Wii)
Left:Bottle/Lantern
Down:Clawshot/Iron Boots
Right:Any secondary item I might need
B: Bow

Unless I need another item equipped for whatever dungeon or sidequest I'm doing, I always have it set like this:

Right C - Ocarina
Down C - Slingshot/Bow
Left C - Boomerang/Hookshot (Bunny hood in MM)
