Something i've noticed in one of my discord groups recently is that if someone doesn't feel comfortable talkin in voice chat, then people question why, so naturally this made me wonder does anyone here feel uncomfortable talking in a Voice Chat or even over the Phone?

If so Why? Whats the underlying feeling for it?

For me it's gotta be just not knowing how people will react to my voice whether they'll take the micky or be friendly, Text to Text is one thing but Voice to Voice another. So mostly nervous really.

I don't like phone calls because you can't see who you are talking to. I much prefer video calls but even better are texts when you can reply to them at leisure!

If i cant see the person i'm talking to I freak out. I don't know why.

I cant do call centre jobs at all. I get so stressed i end up crying. I cant even talk to friends on the phone very well.

I dont know what causes it. Maybe i'm so used to being lied to that I cant trust anyone unless I see them face to face to really tell how theyre feeling with body language and expressions etc.

I don't mind it. There was a time when I was nervous to do calls with my friends over Skype (even though phone calls never bothered me) but I pretty quickly got used to it. Now I don't mind talking on the phone or in discord calls or anything like that. I wouldn't call myself a professional, as I do occasionally stumble over my words a little bit, but for the most part it's fine.

Do I prefer it over text? Well, depending on the situation, sometimes. I find if a lot of people take forever to respond by text, so for things like job hunting or booking gigs, I rely on voice chat to make sure I don't have to wait a long time for a response.

Over the years, there’ve only been two people (who I met on ZD) that I didn’t know in real life who have heard my voice in some form. I now have semi-regular voice chats with one of them as they are one of my best friends though this took a lot of convincing, he made me feel comfortable enough with no actual pressure to do it at all that I took that leap faith. And even though I have never had a voice chat with the other person, they too are an extremely close friend who I trust implicitly and would be open to it.

In saying that, I actually don’t like doing voice calls with people I don’t know, which is the same reason incidentally why I don’t play a lot of multiplayer or co-op games. I don’t think there’s any advantage over text since with text I can reread what I’ve typed and then obsess over whether or not I actually want to “say” what I’ve written. Though, in saying that I’m also uncomfortable text chatting with people I don’t know as well, which is why I rarely ever enter the SB. So video chatting is an even bigger no for me. Chatting to people online in general makes me feel anxious to the point where if I say something, there’s a good chance I’ll delete later depending on how comfortable I am with the person. In spite of my one positive experience, I still feel the same way when even text chatting.

And your observation is correct, people do think I’m weird, or that I’ve got something to hide, or possibly misrepresenting who I am if I don’t want to voice chat with them. The only thing I think it truly shows is my lack of trust for other people which takes me far too long sometimes to let people gain.

I have no problem voice chatting with people and enjoy it a lot. Yes, there is going to be a little awkwardness involved when talking to someone for the first time, but that's something that it's easy to get over fairly quickly. Sadly, it seems less and less people I know have the time for voice chatting these days, but I do appreciate whenever someone does have the time for a chat.

Well honestly all sorts of social communication is very difficult to me so it doesn't really matter. But yeah, I think I'm at most comfortable with maybe video calls if it's someone I feel comfortable doing it with. I am totally on board with the premise that the advantage of text messages is the ability to answer whenever you feel ready, but I also can have a bit of a problem deciphering certain words and phrases and subtexts.

But voice to voice kind of loses it for me I think I always have worries over bad reception if there's a conversation in such an area. And it IS kind of weird to talk to a 'disembodied' voice like that for sure.

I don't really have a problem talking on the phone or voice chatting. I somewhat regularly participate in chats with friends on discord (both who I do and don't know in person) and have answered phones for work before. I haven't had a big problem socialising or talking with other people for a few years, but back when I was much younger I did.

I don't really mind talking in VC or on the phone or in general. I'm pretty good at just talking about whatever topic and contributing to conversation. I play vidya with friends a lot, usually over Discord VC, so I'm not really bothered.
