Visual Novels, and Dating sims

There are a lot of both, mostly on could novel but that aside, they seem to be ignored or hated on for what they are. A lot of time and work is put into MOST of them (I can vouch for this) but people seem to avoid them. I personally enjoy a good visual novel or dating sim from time to time (My recent YouTube channel activity is proof of that).

What I want this thread to accomplish is for people to share their favorite Visual novel, and Least Favorite, or why you tend to avoid or hate on this type of game. Or if you have an idea for a visual novel but have no idea where to start, or if a dating sim or visual novel affected you in a major way.

I'll post my thoughts here, My favorite is Princess Evangile With Happiness (Its in the title 'Happiness'), and my least favorite is Hatoful boyfriend, (it's ALWAYS the birds). With that said, Princess Evangile has affected me a lot, when someone almost (spoilers) Commits suicide, knowing someone that has it really hits home.

I'm not a huge fan of that gameplay style. It's too slow for me, and there's not enough in there to keep me interested. That said, there are lots of great concepts for visual novels and dating games out there.
Also I want to try the Ace Attorney series sometime. That's classified as a visual novel right?

If you're able to get through one (some people can't handle reading 100k+ words) they are one of the best forms of media ime.

The only one I've played is Katawa Shoujo (unless Ace Attorney counts). Seeing as it was birthed on 4chan I played it for the sheer curiosity of what such a game would be like (though only with the assurances that didn't have any of 4chan's signature horribleness). I quite liked it, though the genre is something I'd have to be in the right mood to play due to the slower pace and limited interactivity.

Katawa Shoujo is usually seen as mediocre by fans of the medium, just so you know. There are much better ones.

Yeah I've gathered that after seeing it mentioned a few times on reddit. A combination of lack of money and lack of the aforementioned right mood has prevented me from branching out.

Any suggestions, though, for me to keep in mind for a rainy day?

For something you can plow through I'd recommend Saya no Uta. It's about 8 hours to do it all. Longer one that's good but not too long, is Sharin no Kuni, and G Senjou no Maou. Both made by the same company and medium length games.

Best VN ever IMO is the Muv-Luv trilogy. The first one is slow and sort of romancy, the second one is mostly world building and the third one is ****ing amazing (flips the genre on it's head). You have to at least be able to tolerate romance cutsey **** to get through the first one though so it's not for everyone. It's also probably over 50 hours when all is said and done so that's why I recommended shorter ones first.

Thanks! Not sure when I'll get a chance to get around to trying any out but they look interesting.

Yeah, with trial and error as well as being able to piece things together.

I've never actually played one. The concept seems weird to me. Isn't it essentially an erotic novel... but for men? I guess it would appeal to effeminate men and lesbians. The only visual novels I know of are Hateful boyfriend which is the one with the pigeons and Doki club or something? Those were on the Steam front page and I've heard they aren't the conventional dating sim.

There’s nothing erotic about them unless you go out of your way to play what’s called an “H-Game” (hentai game), or an “eroge” (erotic game). The visual novels that I’ve played have been heavily drama based romance stories that do include/imply sex, but not as explicitly as the flat out porn games.

I do like the visual novel medium. It’s like reading a choose your own adventure style play, except the play is animated and sometimes includes voice acting. The only ones I’ve personally played are Clannad and Ace Attorney, which I’ve loved, and NekoPara, which I absolutely hated, but I’ve watched playthroughs of Ef: A Tale of the Two, Amnesia and a few others that don’t immediately come to mind at the moment.

I meant to include romance novel in my original post, but still, what I said applies all the same.
