Game Thread Trivia Mafia II - Day 1

Not gonna lie, I was suspicious of Rag as soon as her activity picked up day 2, probably for the right reasons but drawn from a wrong conclusion on my part. I wagered that Rag was likely putting forth effort as sole remaining scum. The claim helped her case for me, not because it was believable, but because the route I saw her to fake claiming it was via being partners with Lain and that didn't jive with my initial reasons for suspecting her. I'm not sure if I would have pursued her over DC had I been alive at the end. Overall a well played game Rag.

In terms of the game from a mechanical standpoint, I think the almost complete lack of information flowing to town hurt a lot. The question system I think worked pretty well as is, but to tweak it to maintain interest I think I would baseline the roles at a certain function level and then have the questions expand the roles if they are answered correctly. This creates consistency in roles and usage while still adding that trivia bonus. Then you could litter the game with live trivia opportunities, such as vote tie breakers, day bonuses, etc. I was not a fan of the no flips, but I think if the game has an abundance of info gathering roles that would also be negligible.

All questions:

Answers will follow later. The letter at the end refers to the classification of difficulty (I realize this is subjective and also depends on the person). There are 56 in total. Feel free to try answering them in a spoiler! I would also appreciate feedback on my question writing. For the most part, I wrote these based on random knowledge I already had, but some research was required.

one change i might make is rather than give people a nerfed power if they google the answer, give them a nerfed power if they submit an answer and get it wrong. guessing at answers is fun and when you're guaranteed a power each night it should reduce the swinginess of the game.

This Classical Era composer had a career that spanned three decades, during which he composed nine symphonies and several hundred piano sonatas. He is very well known in the modern day for his gradual hearing loss, culminating in his near-complete deafness at the time of his death. - Ludwig Van Beethoven. Contrary to popular belief, he never went completely deaf before he died. In fact, his hearing gradually started deteriorating long after his career had begun. By the time of his final few years, however, he was very close to completely losing his hearing. His deafness is well documented and I think most people, musician or not, are familiar with the story of Beethoven's deafness.
Which parody icon is one of only 4 artists to have had a top 40 hit in each of the 4 decades between 1980 and 2020? - "Weird Al" Yankovic. With a career dating back to the early 1980's, Weird Al had an incredibly strong career, becoming know as the master of parody. Impressively, he joins Michael Jackson and Madonna in being one of the few acts to have had a top 40 hit in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s, with his most recent being "Word Crimes" in 2014.
Who is the Japanese legend responsible for the iconic themes of both The Legend of Zelda and Mario franchises? - Koji Kondo. A highly prolific video game composer, Kondo is best known as the original composer for Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. The Super Mario World 1-1 theme is one of the most recognizable themes in history and is attributed to him. While not as active today, he still does a lot of work for Nintendo behind the scenes.
What was the first video game in history to win a Grammy award for its theme song? - Civilization IV. Deservedly so, its opening theme, "Baba Yetu", won the Grammy award for Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals, becoming the first video game composition in history to win such an award.
A high profile plane crash in 1959 - referenced extensively in Don McLean's 1971 hit "American Pie" as The Day the Music Died - signified the end of what is now known as the early era of rock n roll. Name two of the three musicians who perished in that crash. - Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly are the two most people seem to know, but J.P. Richardson also perished in that crash. The crash is one of the most high profile celebrity incidents in history and is immortalized as The Day the Music Died in Don McLean's "American Pie".
In a story of which the validity is often questioned, which Be-bop era saxophonist supposedly had a cymbal thrown at him on stage by drummer Jo Jones? - Charlier Parker. One of the pioneers of be-bop. This story is ambiguously true, with many people claiming that it's an urban legend more than anything. It's referenced in the movie Whiplash. Even if the story in untrue, it is quite well documented that Charlie Parker started out as a timid, somewhat bland player who needed a strong kick in the pants in order to eventually develop into one of the most iconic and famous jazz musicians of all time.
Most music is composed using the 12-tone system. In some parts of the eastern world, however, music is composed using a broader 24-tone system. What is this called? - 24tet, or microtonality. This system of music allows for intervals half as large as the smallest intervals playable on most instruments familiar to us, most notably pianos. It creates a far wider range of tones that allows for some rather spooky sounds. Many countries in Asia use such systems to compose which is why a lot of Asian music sounds spooky, or otherworldly.
Adolphe Sax patented this instrument in 1846. - Saxophone. It's in the name! A relatively new instrument by today's standards, the saxophone is actually one of the newest instruments popular in the western world today!
What are the typical voices in a 4-part chorale? - Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass. Almost anyone with a tiny bit of choir experience would have been able to answer this question, though people unfamiliar with music may have struggled with this question. Basses are the lowest male voices, sopranos are the highest female voices. Generally, altos are female and tenors are male, but there are some rare cases of men singing up in the higher ranges (countertenors) and females singing in the tenor range.
Before the modern piano, there was an early version that had a mechanism that plucked the strings rather than hammers. It lacked a sustain pedal and therefore was used primarily for jumpy, moving melodies during the Baroque period. What is this instrument called? - Harpsichord. The way a sustain pedal works on a piano is it lifts the damper pads off the strings, therefore allowing the notes to ring out once the strings are struck. The harpsichord lacked this pedal, meaning holding the keys was the only way to allow the notes to sustain since the keys also lift the damper pads off the strings. Additionally, the strings were plucked rather than struck, which created a less mellow sound than we're used to with pianos. This tone was perfect for the jumpy melodies that were popularized during the Baroque period.
GIMME CHOCOLATE!!! is a well-known song by which popular Japanese kawaii metal band? - Babymetal. Probably the most popular Japanese band in the west at this point. When this song was recorded, the 3 singers were all teenagers. Now, they are in their late 20s. Other popular songs by this band include Pa Pa Ya, Headbangerrr, and Kingslayer.
Name all living members of The Beatles - Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr. John Lennon was famously fatally shot in late 1980 while George Harrison passed away from cancer in 2001. All 4 members went on to achieve great success in their solo careers after the group disbanded in 1970.
When any note (or "fundamental pitch") is played or sung, a series of upper harmonics - the frequencies of which are multiples of the fundamental frequency - can be heard over it. What are these harmonics referred to as? - Overtones. These overtones are what allow brass instruments to work the way they do; by adjusting the speed of the air blown into the instrument, different pitches can sound. Every note we play, even the frequencies emitted when we talk normally, will contain a series of overtones that are multiples of the fundamental frequency.
Surdo, Caixa, Pandeiro, and Tamborim are examples of percussion instruments often found in music originating from this country. - Brazil. These are all instruments featured in a Brazilian Bateria, which is the large percussion section often found in samba bands.
Glinda, Elphaba, and Madame Morrible are characters in this popular Broadway musical. - Wicked.
