Toward or Towards?

I was recently doing some writing and I got hung up on this word. Is it 'toward' or 'towards'??
A quick Google search gave me the understanding that both are correct, with American English speakers favoring 'toward' and British English speakers leaning toward 'towards'.
Which do you prefer? Have you ever thought about it?

My usage changes depending on the context. I use 'towards' when dealing with distances and 'toward' when dealing with abstracts.

For example:
"We were going towards the supermarket when we saw the T-Rex run down the street."
"My aunt gave me £10 to put toward a new motorbike after a T-Rex crushed my old one."

There's a similar thing with regard to the words 'further' and 'farther'. A lot of people use 'farther' when dealing with physical distance, and 'further' when dealing with abstracts. (I really don't like the word 'farther' and never use it for anything, personally.)
