Well for me I think that it's ok to give props to other Nintendo properties... as long as it's not the entire game being packed with them.

I did like the Mario picture in OOT if you look through that one window in the courtyard in which you speak to Zelda. That was a nice little Easter Egg.

i don't actually think there are that many cameos in the series as a whole. I mean, it isnt a big problem if they include cameos from their other sucessful franchise. It's just for fun.

I actually like pointing out things like "There's an enemy from mario!". It's like where's waldo, only you don't know what you're actually looking for exactly.

It having many references may seem childish due to some mario-like scenarios, but it's those scenarios that makes it charming, well to me.

Link's Awakening is a simple game, so simple elements such as the Dungeon-boss-item-Quest Item formula is there, but they made it better and played with it. It's one of the best games during the era, and it still is to me. Seeing a goomba in the game might seem weird, but I feel younger reminiscing the old days. :D

I'm in agreement with Athenian and Hanyou on the last page. Zelda needs to be goofy and funny, and this was a good way to do that. Also, don't forget the Anti Kirby, another LA enemy from another game. :P

I don't mind the cameos and would even like to see more, including from other series. They could probably do the same with characters, actually. As Hanyou said, a Piranha Plant (favorite Mario creatures personally) popping out of nowhere could be epic, and they could even turn it into a serious enemy since there WERE large and terrifying boss-type incarnations in some of the Mario titles (like Naval Piranha in Yoshi's Island).

One thing is I think they shouldn't go overboard with it all the time. It's nice, and adds awesome humor, but it can upset the identity of the series sometimes if done improperly. So I just think they should do so intelligently, but definitely do so. ;)

Those naval piranhas from Yoshi's Island freak me out, even today.
Anyways, I feel LA was aimed at a younger age group than ALttP, but not by far. Mario is considered to be more "childish" than Zelda, so adding Mario things in there could bring the more "childish" feeling.

There isn't only Mario references. Obivously Kirby is in there, but I am I the only one to notice the SimCity reference? Not only is there a guy named Mr. Wright, who is your advisor in SimCity, but SimCity music plays when you are in his house. :)

Yes. One or two would have been fine, but there was just too many to count.

I agree that there are WAY too many references to Mario in Link's Awakening. I would have enjoyed the game more if it was all Zelda and no Mario. Sue me if you must, but I think Mario is just plain DUMB! To keep everyone happy, Mario should stay in Mario and Zelda should stay in Zelda.
