When I was a kid and played Gold, I only used my starter the whole game. Totodile was the one I used. I beat most of the game with relative ease except for some gyms and the Elite Four. (I used a TON of revives and Potions.) The second quest also went easy until I faced the very last trainer. He gave me some trouble, but ended up beating him in the end.
