What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to have a place other than the full ZeldaDungeon walkthrough (which is a lot of reading...) where people can go to get hints and information about parts of the game. I will warn you now, this thread is spoiler-heavy... so, if you need information about a certain part, read JUST about the part you're stuck on, that is, unless you want to ruin parts of the game for yourself.

What can I post about?

Well, you can post lots of things; tips about dungeons, helpful info on enemies, a quick way to get money... things like that. One thing that would be extremely helpful are answers to the various puzzles through-out the course of the game. But I have that under control. ;) Also, it is worth noting that all contributions will be rightfully cited, meaning that I'll give you credit for the tip.

When posting a tip or hint, use this guideline (Of course, replacing SECTION and SUB-SECTION with the section and/or subsection the tip or hint fit into):

[noparse]SECTION

SUB-SECTION
  • Bullet 1
  • Bullet 2
[/noparse]

Where can I look for the tips and tricks?

I will organize all the tips and tricks below into sections and I'll add the tips, tricks, hints, and advice other people post to the OP. Be sure to subscribe to this thread and always check the OP when you need to.

CONTINUE DOWN FOR THE QUICK-NOTES

**The Quick-Notes are under heavy construction. All help is appreciated**

Quick-Notes

Beginning - Skyloft
  • The first part of the game is slow-paced and has lots of tutorials and explanations. One useful tip is after completing the first part of the game (from the beginning to when you get the Green Tunic and Adventure Pouch), copy the file to the remaining save slots so you don't have to do the opening again.
  • After getting the Tunic and the Adventure Pouch, instead of going to the Bazaar to buy a Wooden Shield, speak to Instructor Owlan (he is located just outside the first floor exit of the Knight Academy) and get the Wooden Shield for free!
  • Eagus the Sword instructor doesn't just teach you about Sword techniques! Eagus can teach you how to correctly use your shields!

Faron Woods
  • Once the old lady gives you the ability to use beacons, use them to your advantage! If you find a place on the map you'd like to explore, place a beacon!
  • You can get your second bottle in the Temple where the old lady resides. Simply open the chest there and receive a Revitalizing Potion in a fresh new bottle for you.

Skyview Temple
  • When battling skulltulas, swing your sword in the appropriate direction to make them flip over; when they are hanging from the ceiling use a sideways slash to reveal their belly and then thrust the Wii-mote forward. When they're crawling on the floor, swing upwards and attack them with a final blow. ~ credit to Galfureye
  • In the first part of the battle with Ghirahim, make his hand go in one direction (for example, left), and then quickly swing in the opposing direction (if his hand is on the left, slash right to left... and so on...). ~ credit to RegalBryant
  • In the second part of the Ghirahim battle, when he charges at you, Shield bash (shake the Nunchuck) to throw off his guard. ~ credit to Lukelookslike

Eldin Volcano
  • To open the Earth Temple, you need to re-assemble the key. The piece of the key are at the following locations:
1 - There is a dig spot just to the left (when facing the door) of the Earth Temple. Use your dowsing ability to find the correct dig spot.
    0480-.jpg

2 - The second piece is right near the first one. Find the patch of Bomb Flowers just to the West of the Earth Temple, and throw a bomb down the hill so it blows up the tower there. The dig spot is underneath the tower. (NOTE: You will be returning to this very location later in a game. See the propeller hanging out by the edge? Yeah, make a mental note of that...)
    0483-.jpg

3 - Locate the two Bomb Flowers in front of the Earth temple (near the edge of where the steep slope is). Facing the slope, look to your left to see a wall that can be blown up. Pick up a Bomb Flower and throw it over to the rock. Once it explodes, run down and collect your price.
    0484-.jpg

4 - To the right of the Earth Temple are some Bokoblin tents and a tower. use a Bomb Flower to knock over the tower, defeat the Bokoblins if you want to, and then use the fallen tower to "bridge" the gap and follow the pathway. Once you reach the top, turn left and you'll notice a ledge you can climb across. Drop down, make your way across, and then Dash up the left wall and the jump across to the other ledge. Go to the edge of this platform and jump over to the vines. Climb around the vines (picking up the Stamina Fruit if you need it) and then step on the switch to make a bridge extend across the gap that hindered us. Now, head up the pathway and then dash, as you will burn in the next area, to the right and slide down the hill. Make sure you're on the right side, and stay against the wall in the center so you'll land on a platform. Use your Sailcloth to propel yourself across the gap using the steam geysers, and dig up your prize.
    0490-.jpg

5 - Slide down the rest of the "slide" down. Once you land, run and hop onto the first platform, and then turn right. A room filled with lava should be resting before you. There is also a Bomb Flower... hmm... take the Bomb Flower and blow up the rock holding the lava in... causing the lava level to fall. Now, run into the room, take the Bomb Flower, and roll it strategically up the hill so it rolls down right next to the explosive wall in the corner of the room. Once it explodes, collect your prize.
    0491-.jpg
    0492-.jpg
  • There is a ledge in Eldin with a Heart Piece on it. Instead of wasting time trying to get it, use your Beetle. ~ Credit to everettkagan

Earth Temple
  • If you see no door in sight, check your map! It reveals passage-ways with which you can bomb walls to reveal the path forward.~ credit to Galfureye

Lanayru Desert
  • When powering up the generators for the turn switch in the north desert to open the Mining Facility dungeon, two power up locations are visible on the map and look like mini temples, one is hidden beneath a bombable wall in of the seemingly dead ends in the desert. ~ credit to Galfureye
  • In the event of there being an enemy over sinksand that threatens to knock you over and drown you, roll a bomb at them. The bomb won't sink and it dispatches the pesky foe. ~ credit to Ganondork
  • In the event of battling an enemy that exists in the past and you don't want to fight it, leave the area of the past, throw a bomb in an area that would block the foe's path from an escape away from you and it will run out of its time zone and die instantly. ~ credit to Ganondork
  • Get the most out of your beacons by placing them at the intersections and corners of the submerged wall. ~ Credit to The Doctor

Mining Facility
  • near the end of the dungeon there are 3 slingshot switches that must be hit in the right order, the correct order is 2,3,1 assuming one is the switch closest to the far end of the room going left to right 123. ~ credit to Galfureye

Isle of Songs
  • When you need to align the bride properly to get into the Isle of Songs each square block on the moving tracks corresponds to a piece of the bridge, start off by rotating the center block that rotates the other blocks clockwise 7 times. Hit the crystal that is on the right side to change which barriers are up. Rotate the center block clockwise 6 times to line up the blocks all in a row.Hit the top crystal to change the barriers.Rotate the center block clockwise 1 time. Hit the crystal on the right side once again.Rotate the blocks 9 times to align the bridge properly. If you already messed up the puzzle, then exit the Isle of Songs and go back in, it should reset. ~ credit to Galfureye

The Imprisoned - Battle One
  • When you face the Imprisoned for your first time, he will slowly walk towards the top, damaging you only with his stomps. To beat him, your goal is to damage his toes (one on each foot's back and three on it's front). After taking out the front toes, he will doe an aoe attack with each stomp on the damaged leg. To avoid getting hit, you may either wait for him to finish his step or use a ranged attack. I recommend throwing a charged mastersword attack at him.
After destroying all toes, he will fall over, leaving the sealstone attackable on his head. > Run towards it and smach it with an upward blow.
After his recovery, he will charge upwards for a bit. You may just use one of those air geysers to place yourself infront of him to be ready to hit him right after he recovers his toes. Do this three times and he is history. ~Credit to [Shadowlink]
  • This fight can be cut very short if you simply hop onto his head from one level up the spiral and slash down on the spike. ~ Credit to The Doctor

Lake Floria

Ancient Cistern
  • The "secret order" for the temple is TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, RIGHT.
  • Keeping your Sacred Shield equipped is helpful when facing Cursed Bokoblins because they are afraid of the Sacred Shield's reflective surface.

Lanayru Sand Sea

SandShip
  • In one of the rooms there is a door with the 4 gem-stone key on it. The pattern is BOTTOM, TOP, BOTTOM, RIGHT.

Volcano Summit

Fire Sanctuary
  • If you see no door in sight, check your map! It reveals passage-ways with which you can bomb walls to reveal the path forward.~ credit to Galfureye

Thunderhead

The Imprisoned - Round Two
  • The Boss stays pretty much the same, aside from you getting help of your oh-so-beloved friend with a handy canon to deliver some food / bombs to your enemy. The canon is intended to stop the imprisoned from climbing upwards. Use the air geyser tp land on his back with the sealstone in reach. - He will knock you down though. Although, using the "Groosenator", you can stun him for approximately 15 seconds, giving you time to get up there. ~Credit to [Shadowlink]

Getting the Song of the Hero

Faron Woods (underwater)
  • It's a good idea to go up top on a Lilly pad and douse, or even set a way point in that direction then go and swim for the notes, its a lot faster than just swimming around. ~ Credit to Demise
  • One of the last notes is under a Lilly pad you have to go through the Deku Tree and jump off the top part, onto the Lilly pad in order to flip it over to get the note. ~ Credit to Demise
  • If you're taking a long time to find the Tadtones, Bucha will tell you to go and see him. Talk to him and he'll hint toward your dowsing ability. Fi will then set the Tadtones as a dowsing object.

The Imprisoned - Round Three
  • Same procedure as in the second encounter - jump into a knock-up stream and fire your cannon at the enemy, jump towards the sealstone and slamm it down.
Reload, shoot him in the air, smack the stone.
As for the 3rd smack-age, use the knock-up streams to get to the top, run to your friends cannon, jump into it and fire yourself to the imprisoned's head. -> Pewpew on the sealstone and he is history. ~Credit to [Shadowlink]

Bokoblin Base
  • Because it's so dark, it may be hard to see exactly where you're going, even using the map. Try placing beacons where you see your items on the map to get a better idea of where you're going. ~ Credit to The Doctor

Lanayru Gorge

Sky Keep
  • When sliding rooms around, try to do it from a room in the center or in a corner. If you're in a room in the middle-side (top-middle, bottom-middle, etc.) it's a lot tougher to get into the room you want. ~ Credit to The Doctor

Ending Moments
  • Savor every little bit of the cutscenes and ending! It's joyous! ~ credit to VanatisXII
  • For the Final Boss fight, do not be intimidated by the boss' sheer size. If you slash left, up, then left again, the boss will block the first two hits then get hit by the third. If you're fast enough, you can get a fourth hit in and then he will retaliate. Continue that until you get onto the second phase, and mark what the boss does as the mini-cutscene displays, as it gives you a massive hint on what to do. ~ credit to VanatisXII
  • If you utilize either the Goddess shield or the Hylian you can put Demise's first form away in under 20 seconds. Block and while he is recovering you can continually slash and spin attack until he falls to the ground. When he falls to the ground just keep attacking, when he gets back up he will block your attacks (as long as you are still attacking) and then he will counter, just block again (He is likely to attack twice on the counter) and keep attacking and he might fall back to the ground again, use spin attacks wisely and the first form should be over. ~ Credit to Link8150

Side-Quests and Minigames

Side-Quests
All of the side-quests you can pursue through-out your adventure.

Finding Kukiel
  • This side-quest becomes available right after completing the Skyview Temple. Simply talk to the lady standing outside the entrance to the Goddess Statue on Skyloft and she'll tell you her kid is missing.
  • Your island of interest is Pumpkin Landing, a small island just southeast of Skyloft. Go there, enter the lone building known as "The Lumpy Pumpkin", and speak with the old man sitting at the table (he has a bubble over his head).
  • This side-quest introduces you to Batreaux, a demon who longs to become human. Batreaux also is the one housing Kukiel, the missing child. Kukiel even refers to him as "Uncle Bats".

Lumpy Pumpkin jobs
  • These 3 side-quests become available right after the Skyview Temple. Simply fly to Pumpkin Landing and enter the Lumpy Pumpkin. You'll notice a Heart Piece on the chandelier. Going up to the top floor and rolling into the railing causes the chandelier to fall, and the owner will then call you down so he can speak with you. (Don't forget to get the Heart Piece!)
  • Your first job requires you to take soup to Eagus, the Sword Instructor.
  • The second job requires you to help bring pumpkins to the shed just outside Lumpy Pumpkin. But, the catch is, you carry all 5 at once and you have to balance them.
  • The last job, which you can do after obtaining the Goddess Harp, is to play music to the crowd of people in the Lumpy Pumpkin. When playing the harp, watch the crowds hands and play the same way you'd play with Fi before entered the Silent Realms. Strum according to their movements. ~ Credit to awsomeMrLink

Minigames
Tips and tricks for all the minigames available to you.

Clean Cut
  • Making fast Horizontal and Diagonal cuts is the quickest way to get a high score. Move with the bamboo and think as you cut.
  • Clean Cut is an easy and cheap way to get some treasures.
    16 to 20 cuts = 30 rupees
21 to 27 cuts = Monster Horn or Evil Crystal
Above 28 = Blue Feather, Goddess Plume or Golden Skull
    ~ Credit to Onilink89

Dodoh's High Dive
  • When you first start, make sure the Wii-Motion/Remote Plus is pointed toward your screen, you don't want to have calibration issues in this minigame!
  • You can collect a heart piece here by going through every ring, avaoiding all the Dodoh balloons, and landing in the 50 Rupee space (the red and blue colored space).
  • If you point the remote straight down, Link dives a lot faster. Use this to your advantage when trying to hit that 50-rupee spot. ~ Credit to The Doctor

Rickety Coaster
  • Tilt into the curve just before going into every turn, then go back to untilted on straight-aways. Make sure you tilt left after the first fork to get the boost.
  • Make sure you perform the jump right before hitting the jump in the tracks, the timing is incredibly narrow on this.
  • For the fifth fork (first one leads to a loop, the next three lead to dead ends, the fifth one is a fork), choose right.
  • After the fifth fork, and the up-track that immediately follows, you'll come to another "s-bend" after a wide-turn left that you'll need to just tilt left for the entire time. You'll lose the boost from the one right turn, but you'll miss the two left-boosts and will be grinding too much to correctly tilt on the right. This stretch of track joins up with the side you didn't choose in the fifth fork.
  • There's a spiral bend nearing the end of the rack, tilt to the right before you make the turn and hold it the entire time until you come to the straight-away. I made the mistake of turning when the bend was obvious, the subtle bend at the start really shaves off some seconds.
  • Make sure your timing is correct on the final jumps as they do add another 1.5 seconds per missed opportunrity (3 jumps total, so that's roughly 4.5 seconds you can shave). It seems missing a turn-boost adds anywhere from 2-5 seconds, depending on length of the turn, to your run. ~ Credit to Taomagicdragon

Upgrades

Collection-Related

The Moonlight Merchant

If you head into the Waterfall Cave on the east side of Skyloft at night, you should see Blessed Butterflies flying around about halfway through the cave (just before the steep incline).

Play your harp to summon The Moonlight Merchant -- a very special Gossip Stone. You can buy these rare treasures from him, which is often much easier than finding them in the wild!

Dusk Relic - 100 Rupees
Evil Crystal - 100 Rupees
Monster Horn - 100 Rupees
Blue Bird Feather - 200 Rupees
Goddess Plume - 200 Rupees
Golden Skull - 200 Rupees
~ credit to Demise

Treasure
  • It's super easy to hoard Ancient Flowers. Go to the desert entrance and activate the timeshift stone hidden under one of the bombable rocks. Climb the vines that appear on the cliff and there will be a flower there. Ride the mine cart into the cave and back out again. The flower will have respawned. You can do this repeatedly. ~ Credit to Xinnamin
  • Catching bird feathers is a lot easier if you walk with the net just about touching the ground. It's a lot more accurate and a lot less prone to scaring the birds than trying to swing the net down on them.~ Credit to Xinnamin
Bugs
  • Deku Hornets, Hornet Larvae, Woodland Rhino Beetles - enter Deep Woods. Kill the Bokoblins (they leave Ornamentall/Golden Skulls sometimes). Go near the tree and catch the hornets. Roll into the tree, get the beetles, hornet larvae and catch another group of hornets. Sometimes, you can find one Amber Relic inside nearby grass. Also, you can catch bird feathers here (occasionally blue ones). Get recovery hearts lying nearby, exit and re-enter Deep Woods again - you can repeat the process. Not recommended in Hero Mode. ~ credit to JamesBond007

Misc.
  • Attacking during backflip/sidejump/foreward jump will execute a jump attack.
  • You can execute a powered up Spin Attack by charging your sword with a skyward strike.
  • CPU's will actually give a reaction if you bomb them.
  • If you throw out a Remlit (The Demon Cats that appear at night) out of Skyloft, thew will fly back to skyloft using their ears.
  • You can stun enemies with spores collected from a glittering mushroom with your empty bottle.
    ~ credit to Onilink89
  • If your sword is every off calibration for seemingly no reason, just flail around like Jimmy Fallon for a few seconds. The sword will re-align. (Seriously.) If it persists, then re-calibrate. ~ Credit to JuicieJ
  • If you see a chair or stool lying around and need a quick heart refill, sit down and your hearts will regenerate. ~ Credit to KinRyuTen
  • Roll just before you get into a crawl hole. You will skip a good chunk of it. ~ Credit to Zore_Waterfall

Skyview Temple: When battling skulltulas, swing your sword in the appropriate direction to make them flip over, when they are hanging from the ceiling use a sideways slash and thrust the wii-mote forward, when crawling on the floor, swing upwards and attack them with a final blow.

Earth Temple: Check the map for passage ways on the map, if you see no door in sight, bomb it, the wall will explode revealing the path, this goes for rooms in the fire sanctuary as well.

hope i helped contribute to this thread!

Skyview Temple: When fighting with Ghirahim, always jump to the opposite side his sword is when he is charging at you. For example, when his sword is on his left side, jump to your right. Did this help?

When fighting Ghirahim, when he tries to grab your sword, hold it on the left, but then slash right to left and vice versa
I re-worded both of yours and added them to the OP. ;)

Also, I added a new fact to the section "Sandship"... so check that out.

Another I thought of:

If you are struggling with any boss as far as staying alive, especially for the later bosses you can buy a potion that reduces your damage in half, also if this isn't enough you can upgrade it using bugs to make it so that for 3 minutes (basically the length of a boss fight) you are completely invincible to all damage, it kind of feels like cheating but I did it on the last boss and it worked wonders.

Gonna sticky this too, cus why not.

First off, thanks for the Sticky. ^^ And also, I added these to the OP under the NEW CATEGORY "Collectibles/Misc."!!
