Really Tasty? Or Really Addictive?

So one day I was eating food that tasted really good. I just had to have more. I finished all of it and my mom got mad at me , but that's not the point. What I am wondering is if when you eat something do you want more because it has something that makes it highly addictive? (sort of like how nicotine makes cigarettes addictive) Or is it just really tasty? Or is it just addictive because it's tasty, or tasty because it's addictive? your thoughts

Most food does not contain addictive substances. The most common addictive substances that are found in food and drinks are caffeine and MSG, but sometimes we just want something because it tastes good.

It is most people's nature to want to eat something that appeals to them, and when they begin eating something that doesn't have a lot of substance to make you full, then you tend to just keep eating. Cravings too, come from your instincts. Not that long ago people had to eat anything that they could, and they would like to eat fatty food if they could so that they could be sustained longer on it. Kind of just how people work.

I wouldn't say that I'm particularly addicted to any food that I eat. I enjoy more foods over others, but it doesn't mean that I'm actually addicted to it. In fact, food only pleases me when I'm actually hungry, with I am rather grateful for. Some of my friends just eat to eat and they are really unhealthy because of that.

It's not necessarily the taste, it's the scent.
10% comes from taste.
90% comes from scent.
So it's by what we smell, that can possibly trigger addiction, along with the possibility of taste.

An addiction is a biological/psychological disorder, so by definition I don't think we eat the food because we're addicted to it, more so because we enjoy the taste of it. Like TheBlueReptile said, addiction's context has been misused in society and when we say we're addicted to something, we probably are just exagerating. Sort of like how we misuse the term OCD, if that makes you understand it more.

You'd be surprised to find how many foods have addictive substances in them. They're nothing along the lines of drugs, however, they greatly improve a food's taste and separate the plain from the savory. :bleh:

Some substances to watch out for are Sodium Aluminum Phosphate and Monosodium Glutamate. These are found in many foods especially in restaurants as well as in almost all chips. Might want to put down that bag of Cheetos next time you have a chance. ;)

As for beverages, caffeine is naturally the big one there and it's not too harmful unless consumed in excessive amounts. Remember: Everything is bad in excessive amounts even seemingly harmless produce like bread or water.

Not every tasty food contains addictive substances however in today's world, most do.

If the good taste of foods alone didn't cause us to want to keep eating, there would be no overweight people in the world at all. Haha.
