Overview:
Pyroar is a dual Fire-Normal type first introduced in Generation VI.
Pyroars stats aren't exactly the most stellar, and it falls quite short of OU. A combination of frailty and slightly too low speed do not do it any favors in the 6v6 singles competitive scene.
Despite general frailty, if not an overabundance of weaknesses, Pyroar finds surprisingly good use in the current 2014 official Nintendo Video Game Competition (VGC 14). It gets access to powerful STABs in the form of Overheat and Hyper Voice, and is quicker than most of the current Metagame.
Viable Sets:
1. "Roar Like
Pyroar@Life Orb
Ability: Unnerve
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 SpA, 252Spe, 4 HP
-Hyper Voice
-Overheat/Fire Blast/Flamethrower
-Hidden Power Ice
-Protect
*Pyroar in the VGC format relies heavily on Hidden Power Ice. The recommended IV spread is 31/30/30/31/31/31, allowing for Pyroar to have its absolute maximum speed potential, which outspeeds most things in VGC 14 without a Choice Scarf. Life Orb allows the slightly weaker HP Ice to easily OHKO threats, with STAB Hyper Voice to hit both opponents and do heavy damage.
2. "I’ll kill you! Slowly!"
Pyroar @Life Orb
Ability: Moxie
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
-Wild Charge
-Crunch
-Flame Charge
-Return
*The definition of “gimmick.” Pyroars Hidden Ability is pathetically bad, due to its sad 68 Base Attack stat. A Life Orb is very necessary to squeeze every bit of underpowered damage out of each attack. The best pro to this set is an immunity to Will-o-wisp.
Team Options:
1. Scolipede:
*Scolipede can Swords Dance and Speed boost, then baton pass some real attack to Pyroar, giving it a small chance.
2. Kangaskhan:
*Due to relative frailty, Fake Out support is very useful in Doubles matches. A free turn, to either stop setup or flinch a Scarfed Salamence, is very useful.
Checks and Counters:
1. Tyranitar:
*Pyroar is literally unable to touch this, unless you run Hidden Power Fighting. Just get out of Dodge.
2. Salamence:
*I know what you’re thinking: “But Pyroar counters Salamence!” Of course it does. However, if Salamence has a Choice Scarf it can easily outspeed and take a Pyroar out with Hydro Pump.
