Hyrule Warriors My First Reactions About the Game

So today my copy arrived. I'm still kinda pissed by the fact that Europe did not get any pre-order DLC skins, which should not be DLC to begin with IMO. I mean for starters its a zelda fanservice game. Now im not talking about sexy costumes, jiggling boobs ect... But you know that an avarge zelda fan can appreciate all the hints and nudges from past zelda games. They simply should have made these skins in game unlockables. I just hope they will be available later in the e-shop.

As soon as i started the game, it was no suprise that it was exactly like any other musou/warriors game i played. Personally i'm not a big fan of musou games, I purely bought it cause i like zelda series. Because the combat gameplay is too simple, it can get really repetative quickly. This is why i prefer sengoku basara over sengoku musou.

Positive reactions:
1. In past musou games, running always was on the slow side. Luckly in this game you can actualy run fast.

2. Fusing weapon abilities.

3. Leveling up other characters with rupees, but not higher then the level of your highest leveled character. This spares you grinding to level up for each character.

4. Medals, which is basicly perks and upgrading longer combos. Again, I'm pleased to see that this isnt tied to leveling up, cause grinding in musou games is really boring and timewasting. You can forge these medals by monster drops/materials

Negative reactions:

1. This is more a personal thing but again, still not a big fan of the combo system. I expected a little more refreshing gameplay, but instead musou games refuse to adjust this and still remains the same after all these years.

2. Lock-on. So you lock on with the L-button, yep that works fine. It gets annoying when you are trying to toggle when facing multiple enemies. Cause you don't toggle with the L button. Oh no, you toggle with the right analog stick which at the same time is the camera stick. Now usualy in games the lock on button and toggle button is the same button or d-pad. But to toggle with camera stick is just plain annoying, cause you usually lock on to an unwanted target or just lock off. Also the camera doesnt autocorrect itself during fast action, so if you focus with L button again, you lock on when you don't want to.

3. Enemy AI. Well its not a suprise for a musou games that enemy AI is dumb. Sure the strong minions can put up a decent fight but the little minions without a health bar displayed, just...stand there.

4. Ally AI. OMG your allies are even dumber then your enemies. Even when you take over so many enemy camps, your allies still manage to lose and be taken over again by ease. Even the major characters like Impa or Darunia easly get defeated by a lizafos or something and constantly scream for backup. It doesn't even feel like you fighting "with an army". Its feels more like "babysitting the army". And you can't ignore it either cause usualy defeat of major character will lead to losing. And if thats not the case your main camp will easly fall. So when you take over a camp, you basicly do it with the intention to stall time for enemies before reaching your main camp. And not with the intention of "taking over to set a new defensive line"

I find your list to seem accurate (since I have yet to play the game). Most of your pros and cons are what I would expect out of a Warriors experience, especially the enemies! There are always the extremely weak grunts and the semi-powerful officers/boss enemies. The allies, heck, the never do a thing! Most of the time, the allied forces just spew random lingo about the battle at hand. Sometimes, they may rout a unit or two, but overall, they are not reliable. From what you say, it sounds as if the extremity of allied incompetence is even worse! Also, I find these pros interesting:

I'm not sure if I am familiar with the second pro, unless I am thinking of something else. Is it similar to the dual weapon system that was added into recent Warriors games? The concept sounds pretty awesome. Pro three, I find to be a nice addition because not only does it spare grinding, but it also adds some equilibrium between every characters' levels in a sense. Good observations. Now, I continue waiting!

From what I have played so far, I am really enjoying Hyrule Warriors. It's a really good take on Dynasty Warriors in the Zelda Universe. If I remember correctly, Hyrule Warriors is the only warriors game that actually has a lock-on feature, which I actually think is quite useful. I don't really have a problem with the target switching cause the enemy I'm targeting is going to end up dead before I attack the next one :p.

I got to agree the AI is a bit... unusual. enemies seem to be able to easily capture your bases whereas if the player did it it takes quite a bit of effort. I really don't understand what the allied army is up to, officers in other Warriors games put up a better fight than in this. Also I really hate escort missions. You are trying to get a character to a certain spot and they are just standing there trying to defeat a simple minion and it's like "Will you stop worrying about a simple grunt and get on with whatever it is you are doing?!" Seriously I never had to deal with this in other Warriors games... well I guess in Samurai Warriors 3 this happens as well.

But overall as a Warriors game, It really does stand out in a good way. All I wished for Nintendo/Koei Tecmo to do is manage the DLC a bit better, the whole Retailer exclusive BS is really annoying, especially when you give it to a retailer that doesn't actually give you the Code for the DLC pack.

I think the Ally AI isn't the worst. Some maps that you've cleared for a good amount (say 50%) and you go off on a lone mission deep into enemy territory to get a Skulltula or something else your allies clear a good amount of space. Once I left hoping they'd just hold the line or not lose too much and they captured multiple bases and slew a host of captains. Enemy AI is a bit weird, they hardly attack you and make easy targets, the captains and special units (Volga, Poe, Big Moblins) put up a good fight. Especially if you are slightly underleveled you are getting pummeled from time to time.

The upgrade system unlocking new attacks is great, keeps characters fresh even after playing with them for a while. The combo system isn't really easily managed, but maybe practice makes perfect in this instance. I had difficulty timing the larger combos. All characters so far feel pretty different to each other (love Sheik, don't like Lana). Music is amazing, but we already knew that.

I've finished 3 missions so far. I've never played warriors so these points are just about the game itself not compared with other warriors games.

positives
+classic Zelda themes have been redone bringing back that nostalgia factor
+great fun to play, chopping through hordes after hordes using over the top moves
+shop upgrade system easy to use and allows you to customize what you want to upgrade
+loads of enemies and allies you know and love, bosses from past games return and you dispatch them in a similar way to in the title they are originally from.
+great fairy bewbs
+customizable control scheme
+can choose stage music from a list, you unlock more songs as you play
+graphics in the pre rendered cutscenes are lovely

Negatives
-could use some voice acting in the cutscenes, the typewriter sound when the words appear in the text box is irritating and distracting
-first hyrule field mission's graphics look nasty. The ground looks like something out of TP a GameCube title(good graphics in the other missions i played though)

Overall had great fun with playing it, looking forward to my next session

Usually i don't even bother to lock-on enemies. But during big boss battles were you need to use weapon items is my main complaint. Most of the time multiple enemies is also present near the boss. If you want to use the weapon item when the boss shows the opening, the game is like "lol nope switching to other enemy" and there goes your chance. -.-

Here are my initial reactions about the game. (Still need more game time before I can review it in depth though)

Positives
  • Fun
  • The in battle graphics are ok. Sure they are not HD but they get the job done. Done to the point I am quite happy with them.
  • The cutscene graphics are very good
  • The music fits well into the game. Much better than I had initially thought
  • Lots of different game modes
  • Being able to see any character model/skin in a gallery
  • Being able to chose your own background music for the battles
  • Fully customisable controls
  • Having Gamepad, Wiimote and WiiU pro controller all work with the game
  • Having a badge/upgrade system
  • The different weapons and weapon upgrade systems
  • Having a lock on system
  • Being able to level your alts with rupees up to your highest level character's level. Fantastic idea
  • Different weapons having totally different attacks
  • Hard mode on Legend mode is fantastic. It's hard, but the right type of hard.
  • WiiU Pro Controller works great with this game.

Negatives
  • No way to play with the gamepad but have the gamepad's screen switched off
  • No way to turn off the gamepad screen when playing solo with the Pro Controller
  • The badge system. Having it is a plus but it's just so uninspiring. Not well designed at all.
  • The game spits too many rupees at you. I think the rupees in game and all costs should have been reduced by a factor of 10. That would have been better.
  • Friendly NPC AI is average at best.
  • The basic enemies are focused on quantity over quality. By basic I mean anything without a health bar. Mystic Heroes had a lot less on screen (but still a lot) but each one was harder to kill. In that game you ended missions with hundreds of KOs and not thousands.
  • The OOT/TP/SS pre-order DLC mess
  • Lock on is not toggle-able like in the LoZ games. It's tricky to use at best. [edit] After some use this has gotten a lot easier to use. I think it might be a practice makes perfect for the player type of thing.
  • Power attacks don't feel smooth to use. They are powerful but the animation that happens when you activate them, before they do any damage makes the abilities feel not as well designed as they could have been. I actually prefer the much weaker Mystic Heroes abilities just because they felt a lot more fluid. Not like an interrupt to the battle of sorts.

To be fair, in the history of Zelda has the Hyrulean Army ever put up a fair resistance? Ganon always marches in with ease, that's why you've always gotta clean up afterwards. ^_^

Seriously though, those sound like some well thought out grievances. I've only played the demo here in the states but yeah, everyone else seems to kinda just… stand around. Maybe they'll patch that a little down the line to make the battlefield a more aggressive place. (here's hoping so)

Hyrule Warriors is nothing like Mystic Heroes (Gamecube) where your side fights really hard. But you do have to worry about your own base. If you just rush the final objective you'll always lose on hard as your base will be overtaken. Same deal on normal too actually. On easy you can avoid this just as you kill things fast enough. But that's the fun part of the game. Balancing up the situation. When do you have to race to the objectives, when do you have to race to save your base and when is the optimal time to clear the board (capture all forts) so you don't have to worry about that when fighting the boss?

Also I added some more pros and cons to my post above here.

Even though it seems I have a lot of cons, I still really enjoy the game. The cons I listed are really minor things. Most of the core parts of the game are done very very well.

Yeah agreed the game is actually not that easy as suggested. Even on normal some stages just throw so much at you at once that you are racing to defend everything.

Minor spoilers

On the Goron Stage in the OoT line I had my base destroyed for the first time. Just so much happening at once. Darunia goes ballistic, Bombchus take over bases, which starts the boulders to rain down on base, etc.

Anyway there are multiple stages that aren't that easy, normal mode already gives plenty of challenge. Interesting to see what hard mode will bring.

Pro Tip. Don't fight Darunia and the golden Cucco (plus cucoo army) at the same time while inside an enemy controlled fort. I tried that on hard while wanting to race to finish the level and I just got slaughtered over and over. I did re-do the stage and finish it (but this time without angering the cucoo :D )

(Yes getting slaughtered by a cucoo is a trophy you can earn. I learned that out the hard way when the cucoo army slaughtered me while I was trying to fight Darunia and the golden cucoo at the same time.)
