Love It Or Leave It: Twilight Princess

Please forgive me if this has already been made by someone else.

Alright, this is hopefully the first of a thread series about different Zelda games and how good they were, looking back on them now. Obviously, this is totally my opinion, and please post your thoughts in the comments.

The first Zelda I''m going to write about is Twilight Princess. With the release of the Wind Waker, many Zelda fans were disappointed that there wasn't a realistic Zelda released. After seeing the tech demo at Spaceworld 2000, some of the fans felt betrayed when Nintendo didn't create a realistic Zelda like in the video.

Well, Twilight Princess was supposed to be the answer for that. It was originally going to be a Gamecube game only, but was then delayed further to make it release late enough to be a launch title for the console Miyamoto designed, the Wii. It was changed to fit the Wii's focus on motion controls, and released on December 2, 2006, with a Gamecube release 9 days later.

What do I think of Twilight Princess? I honestly think it was the worst Zelda in the series, not counting the CD-i games. The motion controls were more than a little clunky, and I felt that if you were going to have the motion controlled by swinging the Wiimote, you could have made it a little more realistic, like, swing in the direction you want to swing, and Link could at least swing in the same direction. The difficulty curve is also something I hated. The game is easy enough through the first portion of it. But once you get the Iron Boots, the difficulty ramps up. I died at LEAST 12 times just trying to get rid of King Bulblin. And what's worse, the difficulty goes DOWN after finally defeating King Bulblin the first time. I mean, if you are going to make something difficult for fans, why only make that and other choice parts at AoL level? I had no problem getting through the rest of the game, until I had to guide the carriage back to Kakaricko. In fact, I am STILL stuck on that part, and it is the sole reason why I don't play Twilight Princess so much.

But TP wasn't ALL bad. The hunting around for secrets and hidden skills were fun and made the game much more enjoyable, and I actually LIKED being Wolf Link, as it added to the game a lot more depth. I also liked the twilight and the Tears of Light, which were quite fun (at least for me), and I was both surprised and happy when I found out that those mechanics were making a return in Skyward Sword. TP had a vast world, and I had a ball of a time exploring it. Nintendo had so much potential with TP, it almost makes me cry. Almost all of the problems I've seen with it could be fixed with the Wii MotionPlus.

So, with that said, I give TP a rating of Navi: annoying and a leave it, at least for me. But TP had so much potential, it would feel like a huge missed opportunity if Nintendo didn't create a remake for the Wii U. Feel free to post how you feel about TP in the comments, and if this thread hits the 5th page, I'll do a love it or leave it review of the next Zelda on my list, AoL.

I think it was fine...not perfect, but still good. I think it was a bit easy though once you know what youre supposed to do. Compare that to Skyward Sword, where I died like 10 times even when I knew how to kill that boss or whatever.

As for the Kakariko carriage escort...keep at it. Make sure you use the gale boomerang on the carriage when the monsters set it on fire, and try to memorize the route it takes, and kill the fire archers asap to avoid having to gale boomerang the carriage. It's an annoying minigame, sure. But I've seen worse.

I don't
I love Twilight Princess, but I agree, it is very weird in terms of difficulty. The first two dungeons were straight-foward and easy to complete, then the Lakebed Temple added more vetical and 3-dimentional puzzles that threw me for a loop. I think Twilight Princess isn't the worst, but it's close for it's really annoying difficulty, that loves to go easy, than hard, than easy once more.

I loved TP. I played it on the Gamecube, so I didn't have any of the control problems that the OP had. It's a perfect game for the Gamecube. With all the hidden skills and various items, I think it controls better with buttons instead of motion. I loved all the horse battles since I had been dreaming of having a horse battle since Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask where we could only use the bow on the horse. The difficulty took much too long to get harder though. I was in the Snowpeak Ruins before I saw the Game Over screen for the first time. Despite the low difficulty, I still loved all the battles. However, the battles aren't really the main reason I play Zelda. I love Zelda more for the mix of puzzles and action, and Twilight Princess mixed the two perfectly in my opinion. It seems that TP is like MM in that most people either like it or don't, with no in between.

I think it's an insult to the series in some respects as well as a great video game overall, but I think you should finish it before you give judgment on it. You haven't even reached what I would consider the best dungeons of the game yet.

I understand that. Keep in mind that this is based on my own personal experiences with the games so far, and I only rate the games based on the things that I am certain on.

Loved it! I thought the plot was great and it was a beautiful game. I really dug the Snowpeak ruins and the Arbiters Grounds. I didn't like the whole change into a wolf thing but that didn't stop me from loving it.

Love it for sure, and I feel like people rag on the motion controls too much. If you have a freaking problem with them, then just buy the gamecube version. Although the difficulty level was a little sketchy, it was a great game, and nobody seems to look at the game as a whole. In my opinion, it is the closest to having as much new stuff in a Zelda game, as Ocarina of Time, with Skyward Sword coming in a close second. If you look at the comments on this page, I can almost bet that there are many more good comments than bad ones, because Twilight Princess is really a great Zelda game.

You're forgetting what I said at the beginning of the thread: this is based on my experiences with the game. I chose to say that it was bad because,in my opinion, it WAS bad as a Zelda.

So far it's been great and I'm just about to start the Lakebed Temple, so I'll have to see if this water temple is as annoying as the one in OoT. My opinion might change by the end but I'll just have to wait and see.
