Yeah I'm gonna play with the refs you've given me and make some reaction images. On the one hand I'd like to really nail down a consistent look for myself, on the other I just wanna draw a gray wolf and call it me.

I wouldn't worry about keeping it too consistent, real wolves usually have very fluid/vague patterns so it'll look like the same character either way. also, I myself don't even keep my own characters consistent a lot of the time so it doesn't matter to a lot of people lol

Well one of my characters is a morphing black blob so I HA I GET TO CHEAT CONSISTENTY

The only thing I have that comes close to being my own character, so to speak, is the avatar design I've used in both FFXIV and MonHun.
And even then her appearance isn't perfectly consistent.
