The windows blew
In gusts for outside
I sat up, I opened my eyes
I wasn't there
In the windowed room
I was outside, where darkness loomed
I was lost
I didn't know
Where I started, or where to go
Not a knight
But was on a quest
I never stopped; I couldn't rest
I climbed high
Up the mountain
To find the fabled wisdom fountain
It went forever
That mountain path
I fought to face the winter's wrath
The summer heat
The spring storms, the fall rain
Was it worth these days of pain?
Soon I got there
All bruised and broken
With my single magic token
Then I saw him
The one I sought
Who could solve my problems, answer my thoughts.
A blind old man
His body was lean
His face was dark, but I could see
His old gray beard
His lack of eyes
He couldn't see, but he was wise
I only got one
A single question
To answer all my years of frustration
“Greetings” he said
His old voice raspy
“What is your question, that needed asking?”
I thought hard
I held my tongue
I didn't want to waste this; I only got one
I took deep breaths
And then cleared my throat
And finally, confidently, I spoke
“What is your secret?”
I finally asked
“Why are you so wise, if you would please tell me that?”
He didn't move
For a good long minute
But then he opened his mouth, and then he said it.
“I have lived long”
He didn't fret telling me
“I have been many places, I have seen many things.”
“You don't have eyes!”
I quickly yelled out
I didn't stop to think before I did shout
“You are correct,
but it doesn't matter to me
I need no eyes, for I can see”
Now I'm at home
I am there in my bed
Those eight simple words, swirling around in my head
I heard his words
but what do they mean?
“I need no eyes, for I can see”
In gusts for outside
I sat up, I opened my eyes
I wasn't there
In the windowed room
I was outside, where darkness loomed
