I was skeptical at announcement. I played the demo several times at retailers and never enjoyed it. I played it for an hour in numerous stages with a friend at his house. I can't say I explored the majority of the game, but the flaws in the game seem fundamental and binded to its DNA.
It feels really lacking. It's a game where you mash enemies and that's it. There isn't much strategy. The characters and combos aren't too deep. The visuals from a technical perspective even in comparison to most X360/PS3 games. From an artistic perspective, it's really dull with lots of greens and muddy browns, unlike most Zelda games. And from a hardware perspective, it doesn't make meaningful use of the Wii U game pad.
The biggest problem is that it lacks both the merits of adventure games and the merits of arcadey games. Adventure games have storytelling, character development, exploration, puzzles, and discovery. HW doesn't have any of these. On the other end, it lacks the online multiplayer options that give arcade-like games such as Madden, Soul-Calibur and Battlefield so much replay value. There is offline multiplayer, but it feels simply like adding another player to the fray rather than a tailored and concerted effort.
Worst of all, it doesn't FEEL LIKE ZELDA. It just feels like someone made a TF2 stage with some Zelda skins via Garry's Mod.
This is a full-priced $60 game, a major release on a major platform in 2014. My expectations aren't too high. Does HW need to have every single one of these things that I mentioned? No. But it should at least specialize in a few things. Instead, it's just a pretty run-of-the-mill action game that does some things well but doesn't really excel at anything.
If I'm just going to slash random enemies, I'd rather play the most recent Devil May Cry game for the action or maybe some Lego Star Wars for the atmosphere. HW is not worth full price, but it might be okay for discount. Action-game fans and Wii U owners are better off with Bayonetta 2.
Hyrule Warriors would've been a great Wii title in 2007. On the Wii U in 2014, eh, it's alright.
