I worked for DirecTV as a technical customer service representative, I worked for Allstate as a licensed insurance representative, I worked at Holiday Inn as a dishwasher, and for some shady office in town as a telemarketer.
The rest of the jobs I've worked have been for local ma n' pa shops, and the longest job was helping my dad out at his body shop when he had it.
Customer service is you basically being a shield for managers so they don't have to deal with angry customers, and the amount of things I've been called just trying to help people could qualify for harassment, yes, even sexual harassment.
Being told by an old, lonely old woman that you have "a ****able voice" made me feel extremely awkward, and you'd think management would tell you to hang up the call, but nope! Anytime I would hang up, I'd get in trouble, and I got fired from my licensed insurance representative job because of that.
Story time, I used to be licensed to sell and change insurance policies in 35 states. Insurance laws are what they are, and sometimes, certain states will allow discounts on insurance, provided you meet certain criteria in your driving. Otherwise, I legally cannot do anything to help you save money, because it'd be a felony.
THE SHEER AMOUNT OF PEOPLE YELLING AT ME FOR NOT WILLING TO COMMIT A FELONY FOR THEM IS WAY TOO DAMN HIGH!!!
The amount of times I got yelled at for bluntly stating "Based on your driving record and what I can do, I can't offer you any discounts on your insurance, sorry," is every damn time.
It solidified that everyone wants something for nothing, everyone wants special favors, but many times it just ain't gonna happen.
Even if I could I wouldn't offer it out of spite, because I'm not going to reward ****ty behavior for verbally harassing or berating another human being. Managers may have caved, but I didn't.
In short, autism and ADHD are a poor fit for customer service. Combine impulsive emotions with inflexible ways of thinking and strong justice sensitivity.
It's when I learned that people say they want people to be honest, people say they want people to be direct and to the point, until they actually hear it, then it feels like a personal attack to them.
I have stories of my various jobs I've worked.
