Have You Ever Been On A Cruise Ship?

Have you ever had the opportunity to travel on a cruise ship? How did you find it and would you recommend it?

I've not yet been on an active cruise ship but recently I did explore the long retired and supposedly haunted Queen Mary in Longbeach, California. This was a fun experience but I think it would be cool to try out an active cruiseship too one day.

My mom has been obsessed with saying we should take a family vacation on a cruise ship for years at this point, but it's never come to pass.

After all of the debacles with people being stuck on cruises during COVID, I think I'll pass.

I have a video you’d probably love on this subject that tells true horror stories of cruise ships, but its full of expletives, so I cannot share it here. Am I allowed to PM it? Let me know.

I had a few times as a teenager. I remember them being pretty fun, but that was because I was really only dealing with the activities geared towards my age group. I’m sure they’re probably fun as an adult too.

Technically that’s not a cruise ship, it’s an ocean liner. It’s subtle, but there’s a difference.

I have a very low opinion of ocean cruises, sorry! I get seasick, and despite repeated assurances from others that modern cruise ships have a ton of ways of mitigating the rocking motion, that was not at all my experience. The water was abnormally choppy, and I spent much of the trip utterly miserable and terribly sick with absolutley no recourse for getting off the darn thing. Also, based on news stories and a few anecdotes through personal connections, they seem like breeding grounds for disease.

All that said, my wife and I are interested in trying one of those river cruises sometime. Should be a lot less seasickness, much more scenic, and if it ever gets to be too much, I can always hop off at one of the many stops they make.

Guess I never thought there was a difference. In that case my experience on a cruise is 0
Yeah, cruise ships are exactly what you think they’re for. Slowly moving from in between 2 relatively close ports for the purpose of being pleasurable for the passengers. On the other hand, ocean liners are purpose built for transporting people efficiently across the ocean. The Titanic was an ocean liner, for instance. They also try to be comfortable, but for the most part the people who board an ocean liner don’t do so specifically because they want to ride it.

Ocean liners went obsolete after airliners started doing their job better. Queen Mary’s successor, the Queen Mary II, is the only one that’s still in service today, and tbh she’s more of a novelty at this point.

Nope, I've been on a ferry and on tall ships but that's something completely different. We're going to spend some time on a ship in Vietnam but not a cruiseship.

I did board a cruiseship for a job interview but that ship was docked

Not yet, but I plan to at some point. I'd probably go to either Alaska or the Caribbean. I think it'd be a great way to spend my honeymoon once that time comes!
