This isn't to ask the first one you got, because the majority of us didn't pay for that, it's to ask the first one you bought with your OWN money or your OWN giftcard. The first game I bought for myself was Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection with a GameStop gift card.

geez, this is tough to remember too, ok so I remember when my brother got me my first PS3 on my birthday, shortly after we went to Gamestop and I think I was the one that had shell out the money for a game, and I know I came back w/ Warhawk b/c it was really cheap, so I THINK Warhawk was my first ever purchase

Late 2019: Super Mario Maker 2.
I played it a lot back then. I had a maker account online, but my levels failed to gain attention, let alone popularity.
I once committed myself to remaking the entirety of Super Mario World in the game. But I gave up after Yoshi's Island 2 was finished. (Bad habit: Start projects, never finish them.)
I haven't played in years. The game card is sitting in the game case on my shelf of switch games. Gathering dust. It'll probably be that way for years. Oh well.

I'd love to play your levels! I absolutely love SMM2!

As for the OP's question, I can't remember what I used gift cards on when I was younger, but I think that some late Wii U/early Switch games were the first that I bought with my own money. Maybe Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Arms.
