I've only played the original game, so my list isn't terribly large. A few of my favorite villagers include, but are not limited to the following:

Bea

Aside from the commons villager, I think the other characters are all iconic to a degree, and while I have a soft spot for the legendary Tom Nook, Spirit, quite frankly, is correct:
