Oracle Of Seasons/Ages Choosing Animal Partner?

I've been hearing about being able to choose your animal partner in the Oracle games. How do you do this? The one time I played, I ended up with Ricky, but I don't know how I got him. Can someone give me a description of what you have to do to get each animal partner? Thanks.

It all depends on specifics. For example, if you buy a horn and talk to ricky before Moosh or the Dodongo guy, you get him as your partner. You have to be really careful. The Dodongo is probably the easiest option you can do. And Moosh is probably the hardest one. (But he is still cooler than the rest of them, in my opinoin.)
