Gen 8 Can Pokémon Sword and Shield Top the Franchise in Terms of Sales?

In the first month and a half on sale, from November 15th to December 31st, Pokémon Sword and Shield sold 16 million copies. They're less than a million from outselling X and Y as well as Sun and Moon and less than 2 million away from outselling Diamond and Pearl.

It may be hard to outsell the original Gen 1 craze but this can be at least be the second best selling generation ever due to having longer legs with no third version so interest in Sword and Shield stays around longer as everyone who has the game just needs to download DLC this time around instead of getting a new version. Plus, this was obviously the first generation in HD and on the TV, which certainly gave a boost.

I don't think anything can top the amount of microtransaction sales they got on Pokémon GO, so... no.

Which is a ****ing shame because all the games are are drool on a cartridge. The amazing sales clearly won't send a message to GF to do better.

Between more expensive as usual instalments on Switch, plus DLC (and double that for most players who want both versions), plus subscriptions to Home (and Bank of you want to continue trading over your Pokemon) ... All Pokemon does now is fleece players for less and less quality content.

I think it's a shame that they're selling so well given how awful they were.
