Balancing Your Backlog With New Releases

A Link In Time

To Overcome Harder Challenges
ZD Legend
For every gamer, there comes a point when their backlog grows to a point that it can be overwhelming.

But there are some times when we devote more time to our backlog like when a generation is winding down or when not many new releases in a given year interest us or we just have a desire to play something retro.

Do you have any specific times when you prioritize your backlog over new games or vice versa or do you just play whatever whenever?

I don't often buy games on release so generally the games I play through are backlog games, though honestly the bigger obstacle to backlog games are games I get the itch to replay

Basically this. I always play what I already have and rarely get new games on release. The only times the new games pile up are on my birthday and Christmas and that's only because I have savvy gamer siblings who pay attention to the sales from week to week, especially around Black Friday.

A big problem for me as well is that I'm a completionist. I try to do everything in every game I have, which really slows down progress, especially when you're juggling between multiple consoles. But I'm not exactly rushing to beat every game I have. Getting through the backlog isn't really my goal. Playing and enjoying what I want is the goal.

I don't really maintain a backlog. If I'm trolling for something new to play then I will scroll through my existing game library, but I don't keep an queue of games. If I'm feeling it then I play it, but if I'm not then I put it down.

I could never buy another game again and still have lifetimes worth of backlog to get through and do that a lot. The challenge would be finding friends who want to play all the stinkers.
