It's a definite learning curve (I'm still learning alot). If your a student there is a good chance that you can get free Autodesk products (http://students.autodesk.com/), and I would get to know a good 3D package like 3DS Max or Maya (I'm a little more familiar with Max than Maya). As far as a game engine though, I'm still learning my way around UDK

I'm going to start my own game design company when I'm older (I'm 14 now) and so I do lots of game design. I don't program; I'm the source of creativity and then I'll find some person to program eventually.
