Maybe don't make him exactly a Magicka wizard then? The thing about that motivation is that it in no way connects him to the story going on at hand. It isn't his world so he has no reason to care about the Earth, he has no alliegance either way, he doesn't care about helping or harming anyone...

I'm fine with the backstory and powerset, but maybe a more serious motivation would be nice.
