I liked Super Paper Mario, I thought it mixed platforming and RPG elements quite well. A great game to try out if you see it cheap.

If you can get hold of Super Mario World, I recommend you do it fast. The best of the original 2D platformers. New Super Mario Bros. is really good too, and the multiplayer (Assuming you another player to play with) is very addictive.
