    Zelda What-Ifs

It'd be better. Now, you couldn't just remove the Temple of the Ocean King and replace it with nothing. Pull it out and replace it with new areas and new content that isn't just working your way through the same temple over and over. I can see why people think the temple is memorable, but I'd...

    Zelda What-Ifs

I'd probably bring Saria back into the fold. Were I writing her (and perhaps including her in the grimmer setting I put too much time into on page one), I'd write Saria as a wizened creature more plant than person. She's lived for hundreds of years since the death of the Hero of Time and will...

    Zelda What-Ifs

I mean, not a whole lot. Yuga suffers from the typical issue that Zelda villains suffer from: he's never developed and his motivations never venture beyond grr-I'm-evil. Even if he were a morally good character who was being manipulated, the narrative doesn't pay enough attention to him to...

    Zelda What-Ifs

It is no longer than her involvement in Hyrule, her being kidnapped, and her waking up and standing off to the side while Link does most of the work. It isn't about Tetra, but the story really isn't about any good characters either. Tetra is the closest before the game writers her off. After...

It also takes up almost all of her screen time. The moment Tetra is given significant screentime, she is transformed into Zelda, turned into a mewling damsel in distress, and shoved in a closet. Then write it better so she does. Provide time for meaningful character interaction.

Which never plays a role in how she talks or interacts with Link, and she suffers even more due to not being the POV character.

    Zelda What-Ifs

I criticize OoT Zelda's portrayal for being, "Link, please help me! Oh no, I'm kidnapped! Link, please help me!"
  9. Bowsette Plus-Ultra

    Zelda What-Ifs

OoT Zelda has screentime, but the same way Tetra does. Sheik is totally disconnected as a character and Zelda never uses it, brings it up in conversation, or has it affect her. The moment she has to become Zelda again, she stops being interesting.

    Zelda What-Ifs

But neither OoT Zelda nor TP Zelda have any real screentime or backstory to let them develop as characters. I'm not even sure TP Zelda speaks long enough to learn Link's name.

I mostly just want Zelda to have good characters. At the moment, the franchise struggles with basic concepts like... character and good storytelling. Which versions of Zelda would you say have more development than BotW Zelda?

    Zelda What-Ifs

She is certainly a step up from what the series has managed before. Star Trek still focuses on having characters with depth and personality who interact with each other and whose personal struggles often become the focus of episodes. Yes, they do trek the stars, but it's the people trekking...

    Zelda What-Ifs

No, from a writing perspective. Zelda does not have multi-faceted characters with depth. The ones that come closest (which I would consider to be BotW Zelda and not much else) are pushed aside focus can be put on undeveloped husks like Link.

    Zelda What-Ifs

Most Metroid games don't have good story. What they do tend to have is good environmental story. It's the same with something like Dark Souls. Dark Souls doesn't have a very compelling narrative, but it has much more interesting environmental storytelling that says much more about the world...

    Zelda What-Ifs

I mean, it was. That story you told was about you and your reactions to stuff while cruising in the boundary waters. It was, as a matter of fact, character focused. Additionally, the standard is different when it's a story told between friends versus when it's a story in a published form that...

    Zelda What-Ifs

Good stories are character focused, because stories are about characters. They aren't about big events, they're about people in those events. If you try and focus on the events, you probably aren't telling the story well.

    Zelda What-Ifs

Good stories are always about characters. If your story isn't character focused, it probably isn't good.

Skyward Sword endeavors to maybe establish the origin of that cycle, but doesn't do anything with it. While the "legend" thing might be their rationale for telling the same story over and over, it doesn't make the story good or different. Having similar story structures among different stories...

    Zelda What-Ifs

My issue with the Master Sword isn't its role, but that its usage within stories is totally unchanging. Even though Twilight Princess purports to use it differently, it still becomes drawing the sword to kill Zant/Ganon with. The very notion of a game series' storyline having a formula is not...

    Zelda What-Ifs

Being a fantasy story doesn't give something a pass for subpar storytelling. Fantasy is my favorite genre of fiction, but if an author started releasing the same story with the same characters over and over, I'd stop reading them. That's just too much uncreativity for me.

    Zelda What-Ifs

Because the plot never evolves, Ganon never changes, and Link still isn't a character. Almost all Zelda games follow the same plot structure. While some pretend to deviate, few actually move away from Master Sword, vaguely mystical Princess Zelda, and Ganon being the bland final boss.

    Zelda What-Ifs

Having identical elements is what makes it stale.

    Zelda What-Ifs

I mean, hardly a twist. Ganon is the villain of almost every single Legend of Zelda game. Him showing up isn't a twist so much as it is making the story even more banal. Whatever your reasons for finding the Master Sword, it's still the same old plot beat that Zelda always hits.

    Zelda What-Ifs

It definitely bumps all the textures into HD, but I still find the game's color scheme and graphical style very unappealing. :shrugs: Bold of you to assume Link has a meaningful connection with any character.
  25. Bowsette Plus-Ultra

    Zelda What-Ifs

I think my issue with TP's story is mostly how basic it is. Aesthetically, the game is dark (as in literally. Everything is brown) and spends its opening post-tutorial minutes acting as if the story will be something more tonally distant from other Zelda games, but then immediately shifts into a...

    Zelda What-Ifs

I don't have the same sort of drawn out answer for this, but it is one I've considered. * * * My take? Nothing significant. The island remains an anomaly, a beacon of life in what was previously a blank sea. If the Windfish doesn't wake up, Koholint Island continues to exist. Whatever power...

    Zelda What-Ifs

It kind of stems from my frustration with the franchise. I want a Zelda game that doesn't try and ignore all the other entries in the series, nor do I want the same old thing where Link stabs Ganon in the head, seals him away for however many years, and accomplishes nothing. Zelda is a series...

    Zelda What-Ifs

The setting: My first decision would probably be on that makes part of the Zelda fanbase happy when they hear it: another jump to a different timeline. This is a different era where things seem somewhat darker. The previously majestic castles of the franchise are replaced by ominous fortresses...
