Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

I actually wrote a separate blog explaining the differences between horror and terror. You may have seen that in this post, I used keywords, such as "grotesque." It seems that horror has become a catch-all term to describe "scary" but it wasn't used this way initially, as when you read old...

Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

Oh, yeah! I have arachnophobia, so Skulltulas are a definite no-no for me. It doesn't beat that time a Wallmaster yoinked me into the ceiling at the Forest Temple, though. Can you imagine just seeing a shadow cast over you, not knowing what it is or what will happen, only to see a massive hand...

Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

I played the 3DS remake of OoT back in high school, when the 3DS was sorta hot off the presses. I have a much younger cousin who was playing it at the time, he must have been... like 9 or 10, and I was 17 or so. Anyway, OoT is a pretty hard game for a kid, so I used to help him beat the...

Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

Yeah, same here. OoT was also my first Zelda game, and I was playing that in tandem with Super Mario 64, Perfect Dark, and other N64 titles at the time, although the console itself had essentially obsoleted by the time I hopped on in 2001. I do agree that Majora's Mask is darker in tone, it at...

Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

First, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and elegant response. It is interesting that you call OoT horror-adjacent, but I can understand why you would. Your mention of the dark fairytale or fantasy reminds me of this ROM hack for OoT...

Ocarina of Time is a Horror Game!

So, I'm back from the grave again, and this time with a post talking about the horror roots and gothic aesthetics of Ocarina of Time (1998). I originally wrote this on a new blog I cultivated a few days ago. I attempted to share this on Discord but no seemed interested, so I am switching gears...

Dumb comments you often see or hear

Oh, yeah this kind of thing irritates me to no end. It's also infuriating when people try to contextualize old texts and historicities with modern-day perceptions. I'll give you an example, from the video game, "A Plague Tale: Requiem," the character Amicia is heard exclaiming "Oh Lord" whenever...

Has anyone seen the 1989 Zelda Cartoon?

He was not creepy and he was not a pervert. He was a flirt. Besides, King Daphnes Nohanssen Hyrule condoned Link's interest in Zelda, so are you saying that Zelda's father was also creepy and perverted?

Things That Are on Your Mind

Kevin Conroy, the definitive voice of Batman, passed away on November 10, 2022, at 66 years old from cancer. Knowing he's gone makes me feel like a major piece of my childhood died and went with him. This man defined Batman when I was a kid growing up in the early 2000s, I hear his voice...

Batman won because of what I stipulated. He uses kryptonite, which is cheating. Not exactly an honourable fight.

Dumb comments you often see or hear

I see this in every Batman vs. Superman debate. Oh, Batman can beat Superman if he has kryptonite and wears his Hell-Bat armour and if we give him prep time. So, I agree. If you have to handicap a character in order for another to win, then it's clear that Batman would always lose in a serious...

The Legend of Zelda’s Arthurian Roots: From Excalibur to the Master Sword

Thanks, SMS! I've been eager to learn your thoughts for a while now, so I am grateful that you got around to reading my paper. Indeed, I chose A Link to the Past because I felt it was the most Arthurian-inspired of all the other games with the exception of Ocarina of Time. I knew the instant I...

Any time I go on Quora for the sheer purpose of entertainment. I see a lot of dumb questions on there, one question was, "I'm bored with my wife. What should I do?" One particular comment that truly sets me aflame, however, is "this movie is garbage." All preference is subjective but a lot of...

    What Are You Watching Currently?

Yeah, I've seen it before but it's been years, so I forgot some of the minor plot points. I think I know who you're talking about because he's a recurring villain since he's the central antagonist. There are a couple of smaller villains that reappear, though, such as Jerry Tyson.

The Legend of Zelda’s Arthurian Roots: From Excalibur to the Master Sword

Yeah, that blew my mind when I learned about it. Thomas Malory wrote about the Holy Grail in greater depth, though. He was actually in prison when he wrote his stories. This was at a time when knighthood and chivalry were declining, so the magic of adventure was beginning to fade. As Christian...

The Legend of Zelda’s Arthurian Roots: From Excalibur to the Master Sword

That's kind of you to say! The actual grade was a B+ despite all the thought I poured into this research paper. Well, the essay was never meant to claim that King Arthur or Arthuriana, was the main inspiration for Legend of Zelda. I was actually trying to argue that Legend of Zelda, namely, A...

The Legend of Zelda’s Arthurian Roots: From Excalibur to the Master Sword

Yeah, European swords tend to denote a lot of religious or ideological symbolism as Excalibur represented the kingship of Britain whereas the Master Swords represents the virtues of knighthood thereby making it an ideal weapon for destroying evil. I'd also say that Link possesses knightly...

Things That Are on Your Mind

I'm feeling amazed that I was born at a time when so many incredible innovations have taken root. I was literally born in a time when video games looked like how A Link to the Past did. It's sometimes difficult to wrap my head around this, knowing I am a by-product of '90s history.

Yeah, I'm excited to play the remake for Resident Evil 4 since the original is so clunky.

Do you tend to prefer 2D or 3D platformers?

I prefer 3D platformers because they provide greater depth perception and a wider range of movement. Some 3D platformers can be side-scrolling, though. Pac Man World: 20th Anniversary comes to mind. Some 2D platformers play well, however.
