the only way is to memorize the pattern, your not alone, im sure all of us had trouble on this, it was the last heart piece i needed to 100% the game. i ended up getting lucky and beating somehow.

The boss, well its actually a mini-boss that i had the most trouble with was Darkhammer from twilight princess. this is the guy that you get the ball and chain from when you kill him. i had no idea what to do. i was just waiting for that steel ball to smack me in the face and kill me!

It would be really cool for the next zelda game to have an online co-op campaign mode so you can enjoy the fun with your friends too.
