Recent or older? There are a ton of good horror flicks out there. The problem recommending these movies is that each person is scared on different levels. If you enjoyed it follows, John Carpenter's movies would be right up your ally: Halloween, The Fog, and The Thing are all pretty effective horror fair.
The Insidious movies and The Conjuring really surprised me. James Wan knows how to direct people and tension so I found myself rather engrossed in them. I know they are kind of mainstream, but there is good reason for that. There are jump scares here and there in the movies, but none of them are fake and there is usually enough tension built up before them that they are a really good payoff.
