A clock tower chimes, it’s gears methodically crawl across time, and the face of terror begins to glow onscreen. That is the tone set in this new animation by Cordell Felix (Corshmell on YouTube), which imagines a haunting return to one of the Zelda series most mysterious sources of evil, Majora’s Mask.

Using Unreal Engine 4, Felix imagines Termina hundreds of years after Link saved it from certain doom. With Robert Karpay’s “Song of Healing—Ambient Orchestral Remix” playing in the background, the words of the Happy Mask Salesman scroll across the screen, “Oh…so the evil has left the mask after all…” and the adventure begins. Nearing his end, the Happy Mask Salesman hides the mask deep in the Lost Woods, hoping to prevent evil’s return; but tucked away from ill-fated travelers, it’s power returns.

After watching the animation, it’s hard not to imagine the potential of a sequel to Majora’s Mask, one in which Link must return to Termina to fight the ancient evil or perhaps defend Hyrule itself from the dark power seeking its revenge.
