The Legend of Zelda has always had an expanse of characters with many wonderful and unique Designs, and The Wind Waker is no exception. Over at GlitterBerri a few days ago, an article arose which contained information straight from Zelda’s developers, in this case Yoshiki Haruhana, and Eiji Aonuma, who spoke about The Wind Waker’s character design. Some of the information that arose was about the Gorons, the Koroks, and the Rito, though most of the information ended up being about the Great Fairies. While discussing how the Great Fairies from The Wind Waker differ so much from that of the last game (Majora’s Mask), Mister Haruhana said that the design choice to make the Fairy Queen look like a small child came from a concept well known in many shonen manga.

“The reason she’s child-size is the same reason that the bosses in shonen manga are tiny: The idea that it’s not always the biggest characters who are the greatest and most powerful.”
This sentiment is very informative, for it helps to show where the creators tend to get their ideas from, which is a major step in the development process. It also shows how pop culture can influence the creation of video games in a positive way.
